Question:Has anyone a suspicion that Retrospect can cause OS X server to freeze?

Specs:I am running Retrospect 5.0.238 on a dual 800 mhz processor G4 with 512mb ram. The OS is 10.2.6

Symptom 1: Defering a backup from a OS 9.2 client was followed by a server freeze.

Symptom 2: A "Waiting for Media" alert (althoug the tape could be verified!) made logging on impossible and a restart was needed.

I've run into the same problem with Retrospect Server 5.0.x running on my OS X Server 10.2 under 10.2.6...

It sits there and all my students complain that they can't log into the machine.. So I end up restarting the machine...

This usually happens when, yes - you need to put in a new tape...

If you were logged into the server, you're fine - it just doesn't let new clients on to the server when Retrospect is "stuck"..Very annoying - that's why I'm trying to move Retrospect off my OS X Server and onto another box... from a practical perspective, you end up having separate machines for each service you want to run - one for FileMaker, one for OS X Server, one for Retrospect - just to ensure stability...

Retrospect server has some failure modes where it uses 100% of the available CPU. It also uses a lot of RAM, so things are slow after it has been working as the VM system has paged out everything except Retrospect. However, these both lead to slow behaviour rather than a freeze.

Can you type in the login panel?

Have you been very patient waiting to login after entering authentication? (Like waiting say at least five minutes!)

Can you ssh onto the server when it appears frozen?
