Error 206 When Recycling DVD-RWs

Recommended Posts

I am trying to recycle a 6-disk backup using Memorex DVD-RWs and a LaCie d2 DVD drive. When Retrospect asks for each to-be-recycled disk, it proceeds to erase it as expected, but then reports an error 206 (drive reported a failure: dirty heads, bad media, etc.) after erase is complete. I assume this occurs as the software attempts to start writing to the newly erased media.

The odd thing is that if I stop the backup process and re-erase the same DVD-RW manually (ie., using Retrospect Configure>Devices>Erase), not only does it re-erase, but Retrospect can then write to it in the restarted recycle backup.

This has happened twice in a row now, so I don't think it's a random flaw in the media. I think it's either a bug in Retrospect or the drive, so I'm posting to both forums. Any advice?

Answer: FireWire-A PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-104 1.30 DVD-RW - RDI (TAO) (5.10). This is a LaCie d2 DVD drive. LaCie brags of its partnership with Dantz on its website, so I hope I'm not going to be told it's incompatible. Thanks.

In the interim, a new problem: after upgrading to 5.1 without solving my original problem, I decided to try configuring a new driver for this drive. It didn't solve the problem, but apparently has created a NEW one: now all the disks other than the one I configured it for won't work! They are listed as "incompatible." I am not happy about this. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling 5.1, but it appears not to have killed the "custom" driver. So now I have a stack of 15 "incompatible" Verbatim DVD-Rs. Anyone know how to obliterate a custom driver?

I don't know how to slow down the write speed, but inasmuch as the custom driver has introduced a new problem ("incompatible" existing backup disks) I'm not interested in suffering its drawbacks further. I will look for the driver where you suggest. Thanks.

Well, again, the custom driver currently has made ALL my previously existing backup media "incompatible" so whether slowing it down will solve my 206 problem is moot.

If slowing down the DEFAULT driver is possible, then once I get rid of the customer driver, I will explore that option.

BTW, you had asked up thread for the make and model of my DVD drive. I supplied it. Do you have any information about it?
