How do I verify files backed up?

I'd like to be able to compare the contents of a backup set to the volume that was backed up, in particular to see if the registry was actually backed up (it doesn't appear in the set contents report) but this pertains to other files as well. I've been rooting around in the docs for a while and can't seem to find anything related to this. I'd also like to be able verify that some of the exclusions set didn't exclude more files than I intended.

The backup drive scan reports 207,540 files, while the backup set contains 188276, so I'd really like to be able to see the files not included in the set.

I'm using Windows Retrospect Professional 6.5 on Windows XP Pro, doing an immediate 'Normal' backup of a single 60gb volume (the boot -- C:) to a 230gb FAT32 USB drive using 'disk' backup, Retrospect running as 'logged in user', I have admin privileges.

Here's the backup log entry:

Ok. That's fine. But the issue for me is:

Must I assume that ntuser.dat has been backed up (or any other file for that matter) when there is no evidence to support that other than the absence of an error message in the log? Ntuser.dat does not appear in the set contents report after a backup.

Or is there another way to verify this that I'm missing?

Or is ntuser.dat really not in the backup set (this would be bad)?

I have the same concern.

On a Win 2000 SP 4 system, using RP 6.5 with the latest RDU, I too do not find ntuser.dat list separately.

It could be that ntuser.dat is considered to be part of the "system state" and is not listed separately, but that does not make me feel very comfortable.

A pointer to a list of the files that are alleged to be included in the system state would be useful, as would a pointer to the Microsoft documentation for their Backup API,

I found the "backup API" at MSFT, but it appears to be little more than a description of the API functions for use with tape.

I did not, tho I could have missed it, find any statement requiring the "system state" to be backed up or restored as an entity and not permitting individual files comprising the system state to be backed up or restore individually.
