kokov
Dear reader, My computer has been infected with the w32.HLL W.Sambut virus. My computer is currently using system commander to divide the harddisk into 4 partitions. 2 drives have been afected with the virus. Windows ME and Windows 98. The virus can be detected on the Admin account (XP) with northern system works. Howeer Northern system works has failed to diagnose the infected file and the file has been segragated. I think i my computer has been infected by the virus when i downloaded an infected file from Kazza (a peer to peer file sharing program) and opened it. The symtoms that can be detected on Windows 98 are as follows: The desktop icons malfunctioning. When left clicked upon the windows error message will appear illegal operation. Furthermore if any shortcuts are accessed throught eh start menu the computer will freeze. The are no symtoms so far in Windows ME. However Northern Antivirus has detected that one file has contracted the virus. So far i have segragated the infected files and have not done anything else. Is there any solution to removing this virus without having to reformat the hark disk? Feel free to ask any other information if needed. Thank You for your help. yours sincerly calvin
kaikow
The web sites of the major auntie virus vendors have descriptions of most viri and often describe how to rid oneself of the virus. Take a look at: Symantec Network Associates F-Secure Trend Micro And be careful, last year NAV reported that I had a particular viris, but they mismamed it, and when I went to the SARC site, although the virus was listed, they gave no info on how to fix it. Symantec tried to charge for tech support for this incompetence. I told them what they could do with that! However, overcoming my inherent shyness, I visite the Trend Micro site, found the correct name for the virus and detailed instructions on how to remove. I got lucky, it was a trivial virus.
