Lennart_T Posted July 9, 2003 Report Share Posted July 9, 2003 Running Retrospect 5.0.538 Server and Driver update 3.6.106 on a Dual G4 1.25GHz with a Sun DLT4000 drive and an Apple supplied Adaptec 2940U2B SCSI card from an old Blue/White G3. The backup start all right, I can erase the tape, but when Retrospect is about to store some actual data, I get a Kernel Panic, see below. I moved the SCSI card to a 400MHz G4, that can boot in OS 9. I connected the same DLT4000, using the same SCSI cable as before. Running OS 9.2.1, I had NO problems backing up!!! Restarted the Mac in 10.2.3 (same hardware, of course). I got kernel panic when Retrospect was about to store some files on the tape.. Installed 10.2.6 and all other Apple updates. Repaired permissions. Tried Retrospect again and still got kernel panic. Started in OS 9.2.1 and it runs reliably again. What is "Max S/G segments exceeded"? Any ideas, anyone? The Mac it came in boots from SCSI disks connected to this card. It doesn't have any ATA disks at all! Anyway, in Retrospect in OS X I can erase the tape (including naming it), eject the tape, everything except storing actual data. This is not actually true. The problem with an unsupported SCSI Card is that it "sort of" works but does not work correctly or well enough to be used with Retrospect. I think at one point your card was listed as supported for Mac OS 10.1, but only in the computer in which it shipped (so your current setup would not have been supported anyway). The Adaptec cards were later removed from the supported list for pre-Jaguar because of reliability problems, and your card does not feature on the current list at all! The SCSI support in Mac OS X is very different from Mac OS 9, so having things working on the older system is unfortunately no guarantee of things working in Mac OS X. A feature request: Have Retrospect check the hardware and present a proper error message that cleary says what the problem is and NOT cause a kernel panic.
