Sony SDX-300 drive just will not show up in Retrospect! HELP!!!

Recommended Posts

I've looked at most of the posts and updates here on this site, and I still can't find out why our new SONY SDX-300 scsi AIT drive won't show up in retrospect. I mean, it's connecting, and shows up in the Apple System Profiler and in the Device Scan section of the Retrospect software, but when we try to execute the backup, it says there is no Tape drive to be found. We are running Mac OSX, are using a compatible dual port Adaptec scsi card (making sure it's 68 to 68 pin) and have the latest driver and software. What are we doing wrong??!!! HELP!!!

It's a good idea to post the version of Retro and the version of RDU you are using along with the OS. Also the specific computer you use (obviously PPC G3,G4 right?), and the model SCSI card. It is much more likely to get a good answer when all the details are out there. You may have, like most of us, at one time or another overlooked the obvious.

You may be eligible for tech support, but this is a forum for users and Retro folks to chat. I'm a simple user only, but as a starting point may I suggest you check for updates to your Retro? I use an SDX-500C (which is AIT-2) and had no trouble getting Retro 5.0.238 to recognize my drive with several different, recent RDU's (currently 3.6.106). In my case however, the drive turned out to be HVD not LVD SCSI so I had issues at first with SCSI too, and that prompted this reply.

If you are uncomfortable with basic troubleshooting techniques or doing it yourself, I suggest you seek the help of the fine folks at Retrospect Tech Support from the web or by phone. ;-)

That said, here's my 2¢. Starting over (with a different method/viewpoint) may prove helpful to you even if the steps taken to get there are little baby ones. I don't know that these steps are in the correct order but here goes...

1. The Basics. Is SDX-300 AIT-1 format? This format has been around quite a while, but it is apparently new to your system.

1a. Is the drive a new purchase? Are you sure about the model of your Sony drive? Are the case and all internal parts "stock" Sony equipment? If not, recheck ASP, determine what the drive status in ASP actually says and if it matches what you think it should. The actual drive unit, the enclosure, and the power supply together comprise the "drive system sub-assembly".

1b. What do you have inside the box?

1c. Is the drive interface SCSI? If so what flavor- SCSI-1, usually 25 pin D type or 50 pin Centronics on the enclosure; SCSI-2, usually 68 pin VHD; SCSI-3 or Ultra160, always 68 pin VHD or VHLC?

2. Have you a way to check the drive on another computer and SCSI card combo that already works? You will need to install Retrospect again which may prove instructive to you. Be sure to uninstall when done checking.

3. Is the SCSI card new? Check the interface again... Turn off the MAC, unplug it, make sure the PCI SCSI card is seated. plug in a drive and restart. with nothing else plugged in to your MAC see if ASP sees the drive.

3a. If the card is new check very carefully that it is MAC OS X compatible Adaptec stopped making compatibly OS X and does not support OS X past the 2930 so far as I know. The 29160 may be the model you have...

4. Do you have any other SCSI devices attached to this Adaptec SCSI card? On the same or other ports? Do other drives work correctly on the same port? Have you tried another port of the card? Does it slow down other drives when you have this drive attached? Check your manual on the drive, verify the type of SCSI it requires. Recognizing the drive in ASP and Retro may be different if the drive can't listen to the correct data rate when Retro talks to it.

5. Check and substitute, if possible, all cables and adapters. Try them on other drives if you can.

6. Put a tape into to drive and see if it loads OK. Check the lights on the drive and verify drive operation according to your manual.

7. Recheck with Retro.
