OS X Retrospect backing up an NT server with SQL database--possible?

Recommended Posts

Hello Forum,

A client has an Xserve running the latest OS X version of Retrospect with an autoloader tape drive, and everything is working great for the design department. However the accounting department NT server's backup system is failing.

I was wondering if it would be possible for the OS X Retrospect to backup a "Greatplains" (a Microsoft product) accounting database which uses SQL server. Apparently an agent would be needed to back this up sucessfully. Additionally, I have been told for this setup it would be somewhat important for the NT registry to be backed up as well.

Is it a pipe dream in thinking that Retrospect for OS X would be able to backup a seperate NT accounting database server?

I am asking if anyone could point me in the right direction, it would be great if this could work, as the company doesn't want to spend anymore money in that they just purchased this great Macintosh backup system. Again thanks for the tips!

Well I guess it's not possible, due to the lack of response. I would have thought for such a "powerful" backup program it would have been able to do such a thing. Come on retrospect experts, at least tell me it ISN'T possible!

Hi

I am not sure with the Mac OS X product if you can backup a LIVE SQLServer. (At one point, Dantz was going to make the Windows product do it.)

BUT maybe you can have the other department occassionally shutdown their databases and do a cold backup. OR do an export of their databases. Coupled this with the transaction logs being backed up, you might be able to help.

This would be better than nothing. When I would backup the SQL server with Retrospect on a OS 9 box, I did all of them, just to be sure. People weren't on the system after 7pm, so I had the luxury of all of the ideas....
