Retro 6.x fails with 519 net error on just one W2K PC - Open File?

I'm having trouble getting one of my two network clients backed up using Retro 6.x and the clients. The networked PC is running W2K SP3 and is very stable. Ran chkdsk and did clean boot. Tried previewing the backup and it always gets stuck at the same file count spot. One time I saw an error of -519 - network error. I am running a 802.11b network. All network access works great.

Interestingly, I can create a network share to this computer and run a backup with Retro 6.x and it works perfectly. I think that really rules out that my net is hosed in some way since this works.

I suspect that Retro 6.x is getting hung on and open file or something and just times out. There doesn't seem to be a way in the options to tell Retro to skip open files? I am also peeved that you are charging $49 for me to upgrade to a point release to 6.5 just to handle open files better. I could handle open files with no issue when I used Veritas backup software which I swtiched from to Retro 6.x.

What are my options? Is there a moneyback gurantee that Retro 6.5 will solve my apparent problem with open files? Or should I just backup from a network share as a workaround?

The 519 means that Retrospect was able to see the client, but something broke the network connection for a period of time preventing new data from being transfered.

Do you get the 519 error with a Wired network?

Make sure the firmware for the Wireless router is current.

The Retrospect Client is using TCP, while Filesharing might be using the MS Networking protocols.

Also, Retrospect Client tends to use much more error correction and push a greater amount of data over the network in a shorter amount of time. Different Network commands are being used with the client vs Filesharing.

Keep in mind that a backup over Filesharing will not copy the registry, NTFS permissions and less open files then the client.

Well your points are all well and good but the bottom line is I can't back up something as simple My Documents on my D: drive with the Retro client. So, I'll just have to settle for the "inferior" method of backing up the file share. I looked at the log and the difference in network throughput was very minimal between my "problem" pc and another machine that seems to work with the Retro client on the same wireless network.

I partition my drives and only put my OS and programs on C: and then I can do a quick PowerQuest DiskImage to CD or a network share to provide for disaster protection. I've used DiskImage for years and I know it's reliable.

Thanks for editing my messages! I don't know how I could get by without your help!

It would be nice if the same effort that goes into editing my messages could be devoted to resolving the issues I have raised:

1. Why do I get a 519 error message at exactly the same file count scan everytime? If it was a random network error, wouldn't it appear at different file count each time?

2. Will Retro 6.5 definitively deal with open files? I feel this feature was a serioius omission in 6.0. I paid the full price for the uprade to 6.0 and there were never any product updates. Then just a "point" release and another full upgrade price? I looked over the feature set for 6.5 and there is precious little for the home end-user. How about a break for a current paying customer?

3. Am I wasting my time here? Is there any official support/ I'm unclear who the forum moderators represent. Are they Dantz reps?

4. You may not like my tone but I have asked over several weeks for some assistance and I have not received anything useful to solve my problem.

Why do software companies treat their customers so cavalierly? The deficiencies in the Retro product are frustrating. I lost capabilities (open file backup) by moving to your product.

I started out being nice and asking politely but now I just get edited messages. An informed response would be helpful.

I wish I could help you, I too am having new 519 errors with Retrospect Windows. I also was frustrated by the lack of 6.0 bug fixes. I'd rather Retrospect were a lower priced product with a subscription option for updates -- that would incent them to maintain the product.

Dantz has a long reputation for trouble managing a very complex software product. I suspect Retrospect is too complex for the business model that supports it; Dantz really doesn't have a good enough revenue stream to support a mid-range backup product.

I will continue to explore other backup options, but at the moment we don't have a lot of choices.
