support for NTFS under USB2??

Recommended Posts

thansk much for your info.

1)any reason why the buslink usb2 box wouldnt like to be NTFS?

2)I understand that with my XPpro system, I cannot format it back to FAT32 (limit of 32GB for formatting operation). Any reason why I would want to go back?

3)Does the formatting to NTFS go nicely or is there anything i should watch out for?

from your description, i can tell you know a lot more about this stuff than me, thanks for the help in advance!

Not that I'm aware of. But I don't have a buslink and I actually formatted the drive when it was IDE, out of the USB-to-IDB box. I formatted it with the WinXP Pro boot CD and installed WinXP Pro on it at that time in case I ever want to boot from it (after taking it out of the USB case and hooking it up as IDE) to run RP6 for a recovery.

That may be true with MS Windows formatting tools. I have PartitionMagic (6, 7, now 8, from www.powerquest.com) for heavy-duty formatting and I think it will go both ways, although I don't know of a good reason to convert back to FAT. But I pretty much format everything (40-120G+ HDs) as NTFS these days. Some people think there is more chance of recovering a FATx formatted drive with DOS-based tools, but I think there's more chance of losing one. And I have lots of backups and NTFS recovery stuff.

Certainly formatting from scratch (NTFS or FAT) works fine. I haven't converted a drive (e.g. FAT->NTFS) in a long time so I don't know if there are any gotchas with the current OS and tools. But if I were doing it I would certainly back up stuff first. And personally I'd use PartitionMagic instead of the MS tools, but you may not want to buy that for a one-time thing.
