EIK
Hello, I'm using Retrospect Express in 10.2.4. I'm trying to backup to my Western Digital 120GB Firewire drive, but Retrospect Express won't recognize it. I have downloaded, and installed the latest version of the software and drivers. The drive shows up on the desktop. It works fine with Retrospect Express in OS 9 Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, EIK
Mayoff
These documents should be helpful: http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=kbase&ACTION=KBASE&id=27386 http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=kbase&ACTION=KBASE&id=27501
EIK
Thanks, but I still don't understand why I can't use the "Removable Media" function like I could in OS X. I like having a separate "backup set" on my internal drive in case my backup hard drive fails. I won't have this if I use the "file backup set". The way I see it now I'll have to use the duplicate function after erasing my backups that I made to my firewire drive in OS 9. Is that correct? In "Technical Note NO. 503M", that you gave to me Mayoff, it says "The drawback to a file backup set stored on a hard drive is that hard drives are not removable media and cannot easily be stored off-site for safekeeping. USB or IEEE 1394 (FireWire) drives that are hot swappable offer greater flexibility in this. Incorporating more than one backup drive allows for true media rotation, increasing the security of your backup strategy". So what do they suggest I use? Thanks A Lot, EIK
AmyJ
Under OS 9, some disk formatting utilities incorrectly set the "removable" bit on some drives. Some users with external FW drives incorrectly used Retrospect to access a fixed platter external drive as if it were a removable device (with media). Under OS X the removable bit on a drive is ignored (by the OS, and therefore by Retrospect). So you won't see a fixed platter hard drive as a removable device in Retrospect 5.0, which is as it should be. The correct way to backup to a hard drive is with a File backup set. If the drive is seen on the desktop, Retrospect will see the drive when creating a file backup set. Please see the following link on backing up to hard drives: http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=kbase&ACTION=KBASE&id=27501 We have never supported backing up to hard drives as removable media (Disk backup sets). Doing so may prevent the ability to restore. We hope to incorporate the ability to span multiple hard drives in a future release, as we've done with the Windows product. bradfordakerman
I have to say I am disappointed and a bit stunned that this latest version of Retrospect Express doesn't backup my new iMac to my new FireWire drive. I was under the impression that this wouldn't be a problem. This is why I bought it---for backups. I was hoping to run an EasyScript to run at night---that was the spirit. My internal drive is huge. The only solution I know if it to find something that will run automatically. Help. Brad P.S. I originally saw this guide that states Retrospect backs up to FireWire Hard Drives: http://www.dantz.com/products/maccompare.html
Mayoff
I don't understand why you can't save a File Backup Set to the Firewire hard disk and use it as a destination. I do this at home every single night under OS X and it works perfectly without failure.
bradfordakerman
I was under the impression you cannot schedule these backups to the external FireWire drive. Copying files to another drive manually defeats the purpose.
Mayoff
A script using a file backup set is totally available to you. Just change the destination in the script to a File Backup Set. It is what I do at home.
AmyJ
Quote: P.S. I originally saw this guide that states Retrospect backs up to FireWire Hard Drives: Retrospect absolutely backs up to Firewire hard drives - manually or automatted. However, you have to backup to them the correct way with a File backup set. See the following tutorial for backing up to hard drive with Retrospect. You'll see screen by screen how to create a File Backup set. http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=kbase&ACTION=KBASE&id=27501 You can also use the Easy Script wizard - when prompted for Backup Media type, choose File backup set. When prompted to save the file backup set, save it on your Firewire drive.
