trhess
Hi- I'm using Retrospect Backup Server for Windows version 5.6 to backup about 50 clients over a network. I've elected to use the backup server option as opposed to the regular scripted backup because not all clients leave their computers on during the night and many do not want their work affected during the day by backups. I have been performing these backups on Tues and Thurs nights for one group and Mon and Wed for another group. They must run between 6PM and 7:30AM. I've had no problem with the backup server thus far! I'm wondering, though, how I might move tapes for off-site storage. The manual mentions augmenting the backup server operation with other scripts (specifically, with recycle backup scripts). How exactly does that work when you have computers that show up only periodically on the network? Is there a way to use backup server to do recycle backups or something similar? Thanks for your suggestions. -Tara
pkolbus
Tara: The function of another Recycle script is simply to reset the backup set - you don't have to backup everything on the network. What I do is this; it seems to work quite well: 1) Weekly (Fri nite): Recycle backup, C: on backup server only (about 1 GB). Scheduled with 2 sets (alternating weekly) and I'm planning on rotating in a 3rd for safety. 2) Backup Server, activates early Sat AM, to wrap up Friday by 4 PM. All network volumes, all local volumes selected. Both media sets are defined. (1) takes about 10 minutes, but I've got other maintenance tasks that run overnight. All the real data on the file servers gets picked up over the weekend, and workstations come in as the work week starts. Good luck! Peter
