Problems with Retrospect Workgroup and Sony AIT Autoloaders

Recommended Posts

I have seen this topic discussed at length all over these forums, but have yet to find a fix for my problem. Any help is appriciated. I will list as much information on my setup as possible.

I am having the SAME problem with TWO different computers and TWO different Sony AIT autoloaders.

If I do a clean install of Retrospect with the RDU, Retrospect will see my drives properly, and will give me the loader menu to control the tapes. It will also successfully auto-run a backup at night, properly finding the media.

However, it only will work one time. After one succesfull backup, retrospect will still see the device in the device list, however the loader menu is gone, and it will not auto-run at night, instead it will time out waiting for media.

Again, I can reinstall Retrospect, and it will again work once. This is happenining the same on both of my servers, using either drive on either server.

I have tried different cabeling, SCSI ID's both high and low to no avail. It works without problem using Retrospect in Mac OS 9.x.

Please help!!

I am seeing a very similar problem. My setup is Xserve running OS X 10.2.8 and Retrospect 5.0.238 with driver update 3.6.106. I am using the Sony TSLA-SA500C AIT-2 autoloader.

A week or so ago I was able to complete a multi-tape local backup normally. Today, Retrospect does not see the loader (I get no loader menu) - but the drive does appear in the list.

So, today I am completely prevented from running a critical network backup. Frustrating?

This is happening again. Relaunching Retrospect didn't fix it. Restarting Xserve didn't fix it. An Xserve, Atto card, Sony AIT-2 drive is a rather expensive backup system to have sitting around not working. Why can't Retrospect see the autoloader??

Hi

Do you have the latest Atto drivers for 10.2 installed? When Retrospect cannot find the device does it show up in Apple system profiler? Can Atto's utilities find the device?

Thanks

Nate

Yes, latest firmware & latest Atto driver. Yes, it shows in Profiler and in Device Status (sometimes with "unknown" status). I'm not sure if Atto's Configuration utility shows devices on a chain; since the drive is no longer connected to the Xserve I can't confirm this right now.

I've stopped attempting this on the Xserve, having had no success, and have moved the drive to a desktop G4 with Adaptec SCSI, so that I can actually make backups with fewer problems. However I still need to resolve the Xserve/Atto/Retro5/AIT2 issue.
