Retrospect 5 - Mac OS 10.2.4 & Sony AIT2 = CRASH!!!!

Recommended Posts

I have migrated from Retrospect 4.3 and Mac OS 9.22 on PMac G3 B&W 350 to a PMac G4 400 with the following configuration:

Ram 384Mb

Mac OS 10.2.4

Retrospect 5 (newest version)

Adaptec SCSI Card 2940U2W for Mac

External AIT-2 Lacie (Sony SDX-500C revision 0102)

nr. 2 IDE Drives 80Gb + 20Gb

I have nothing else installed on this mac.

When i start the backup of a client on the lan to a new backup set on the AIT the system crash with a message saying "You have to shut down your computer...." If i start the backup to a file on the IDE hard Disk there's no problem.

The AIT is seen from the apple system profiler and from retrospect (i have updated the RDU) infact i can erase the tape and it rewinds normally, the problem begins when it starts writing(???).

I woul like to know if the problem is in the Adaptec card (which is fully comp. with my AIT?) or in the AIT.

May i leave the rerospect 4.3 release on the clients (with OS 9)?

On the prior mac with retrospect 4.3 i have been using the same AIT and SCSI card for about 3 years without any problem.

Please Help!

Someone knows the size limit of a retrospect backup file? i was thinling to use the new Lacie Big drive 500Gb with retrospect.

Regards

Well, thanks god there is someone else with this issue. I have been beating my head against a wall with this exact problem. I have spoken to Apple who have suggested that I apply the 10.2.5 update.

I expect that the problem is due to an incompatibility between Dantz and the 10.2.4 Apple drivers for the fast wide adaptec SCSI cards... seems to be the only possible explination.

Will try the 10.2.5 update and see what happens..... crazy.gif

I am agree, i think it is very strange that a scsi card like this one (high end) is not compliant with MacOsX, but it seems the only explination, but Adaptec is advised that i'll never more buy its products.

I have also tested the AIT with a Sony utility in command line mode, it runs some tests like rewinding, erasing and writing to the tape, in this mode it works, i am thinking the problem is between the Adaptec and Retrospect....

bye

Well, I have just updated the G4 QuickSilver to 10.2.5, running the latest Retrospect. And Guess what, as soon as Retrospect goes to write....

"You must restart your computer"

I have never seen anything like this in all my years of running Retrospect. The DAT unit will read, rewind and even restore from DAT but it will not backup. I tried copying data and forcing a script to no avail.

Such is Life

Guess i will have to back track this server now. Considering it is riddled with permissions and accounts it should be a bit interesting. Does anyone know if retrospect actually works with 10.2.3 or is it just theory? smirk.gif

The last attempt I made was using 10.2.5, but i have tried using 10.2.4. kinda hoped that 10.2.5 was going to fix this problem. I have not tried any versions of 10.2 previous to 10.2.4.

So at this point the machine is running 10.2.5, has an HP DAT unit. Adaptec 2940UW (updated firmware) and is on a Quicksilver G4. The only service the machine is performing is file services using AFP.

To add to the confusion today I tried running a backup on a 10.2.4 Server (DP 500MHz G4) with an XServe as a client. This had our Adaptec 2930 SCSI card and HP DAT unit. This seemed to work nicely last night backing up all data and even running out of tape.

I have tried this SCSI card in the quicksilver along with out TAPE unit, so I thought that it might have been the Server version of Retrospect that we were running... alas no. Their system still crashed, I am at a loss why everything seems to run under 10.2.4 server and not 10.2.4 client... so much so that I have recently escallated this to Apple in Australia, as I feel that it must be something either in the firmware of the clients G4 or a driver for the Adaptec SCSI card under 10.2.4 and 10.2.5 client.

FYI, have swapped out the logic board, processor, Video card, modem, RAM and Hard drive... I seem to be running out of parts.

I am using Adaptec SCSI Card 2940U2W for Mac (not server bundle, is a retail version)

External AIT-2 Lacie (Sony SDX-500C revision 0102)

I have been using it for 2 years on G3 B/W with Retro 4.3 and OS 9, buckin up every night over 60Gb.

I have updated to 10.2.5 the problem still remain.....

I am gonna buy a new SCSI adapter or a Big IDE Disk

Ciao

Well, I have found out my problem.... the Adaptec 2940UW had its support dropped upon the introduction of OS X by Adaptec. Also the 2940UW is not qualified for use in any system new than a PowerMac G4 (Digital Audio) due to firmware issues.... crazy.gif

So If you have a 2940UW card and it is working. Do not upgrade your computer.

Such is life.

SCSI drivers that are compatible with Retrospect
