brettp
I have a Sony AIT Autoloader TSL-SA500C 4 tape drive and a 50 person art department. I want to be able to set up multiple backup nights (4 in all) with Retrospect and use this Sony drive to do my nightly backups of the work stations. My problem is, can I designate which tape to send the files to each night? Right now (I believe) if I backup on day 1 to this 4 tape cartridge, it writes onto tape 1 in the magazine. Do I need to set something to have it load a different tape in the magazine to run the day 2 backup so it doesn't use tape 1 and overwrite the files it just backed up the night before? Is this even possible? I have Retrospect 6 Single Server running on a Win2K server. Thanks for any help.
mcswgn
You do not need to worry about it overwriting a tape. Retrospect will NOT use a tape that is already part of a backup set for anything other than that backup set. To use a tape for anything else will require removing it from the backup set by either manually erasing it (which will make the backup set very unhappy) or resetting the entire backup set (which removes all of its tapes even without erasing them). That doesn't mean this will necessarily work. Some people have had difficulty getting retrospect to accept a blank tape from an autoloader for some reason. (Requests a tape and doesn't recognize there is a whole stack of them in the loader.) I have no personal experience with that, however. If you can get it to write to tape one, you are probably home free.
