Where to go to understand what all these products do?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone-

I'm having a devil of a time. I've been using Retrospect on MacOS since about 1992. We all know that the product can be hard to work with for beginners, but I'm past all that, being a veteran and all.

But now I'm having trouble just understanding what the heck product I am supposed to buy!

I'm currently using Retrospect 4.0 with those old fashioned Remote client codes (I don't even know if Dantz still uses those), on a G4 with a nice new DDS-4 drive, an Adaptec card and about 7 Mac clients and one PC client.

I would like the following:

- Be able to run from OS9 and OSX as I am about to switch my computer over

- Be able to backup Mac and PC clients as I do today with v4.0

Is there a product that does this? My head is spinning.

Thank you,

Paul

The following product matrix may be able to clear up your confussion a bit more:

All the 5.0 products will run on OS 9 and OS X. The questions you need to consider are:

- How many clients will you need

- Is it more cost effective to upgrade the application and the client packs - or to buy a higher version which comes bundled with clients

- Are your clients all on the same subnet as the backup server? If not, you'll need Workgroup or Server for the ability to Add by Address or use Subnet Broadcast.

Retrospect no longer uses Activator Codes - they have been replaced by the License Manager which dynamically controls your licenses and assigns them out as needed (when clients are logged in) and takes them back when needed (when clients are 'forgotten').

Here's a link to the change document from 4.3 to 5.0:
