kaikow
May both Dantz Pro and Backup MyPC be installed on the same system? If so, wil that work for the demo version of Dantz Pro?
AmyJ
Backup software programs do not always "play nice" together on the same system. My advice would be to try it. If you see any problems with Retrospect, uninstall Backup MyPC to see if the issue is resolved. The most common conflict is with accessing devices - only one program can load a device driver at any given time. Retrospect unloads drivers when quit, while other programs may keep drivers loaded at all times.
kaikow
I would rephrase the 1st sentence of AmyC's reply as 'Windows software programs do not always "play nice" together.'. But, lemmee clarify my question. It would seem that backup devices that are seen as containing logical drive letters, such as external USB drives, CD-RW/DVD(writable, be they internal or external) should have drivers that are part of the OS, or installed when installing the drive. What business does ANY program have removing a driver for such a device? I sure hope that Retrospect does not remove such drivers. Does Retrospect remove drivers for such devices? Tapes are another matter, as the driver has to be tied to the backup program.
kaikow
I installed Retrospec Pro v6.5.283. I've been able to use both BackUp MyPC and RP with a SCSI tape drive and a USB external drive with no apparent conflict between the two backup programs. Of course, now that I've stated this, something is bound to go wrong.
gbw_on_wheels
Hi Howard, I was a bit confused about the driver stuff when I first started using Retrospect with my CDRW drive. I don't beleive the software touches the windows drivers for your backup devices (I don't know about the tape drive stuff, don't have one), I think Retrospect loads it's own special drivers when you open the software, then when Retro closes, the special drivers are gone till next time. I first wondered why would Retro need special drivers; I think their driver takes care of the nice things like opening the tray of the CDRW drive when it's time for you to insert the next disc, and another nice touch is not having to format the CDRW disc (or DVD RW) before using it for backup. Retro uses the RW disc the same as it does a CD-R or DVD R, with the exception that you can "recycle the RW's by having Retro erase the disc back to the brand new state and use it again. When I first tried using CDRW for backup, I kept trying to format the RW disc, and everytime, Retro rejected it, or wanted to erase it before using it, and I didn't understand why I had to erase it when there was nothing on it! If I had understood that earlier, (read directions when all else fails) it would have gone smoother. Thanks to some help from our moderaters, I am really happy with Retrospect. Hope this helps, Greg
