gmorales
I am new to the starge world and wanted someone to double check my strategy. I am running Prfessional 6.0 and am backing up numerous machines on the network. 1. Backing up the server I am backing up the server onto a CD-RW (company just started) I am doing this M-F. This raises a question for me. Right now, the data fits with room to spare. What happens when it fills the Disk? I know I can add another type of media to the backup set, but then what? Can I add this data to a second CD-RW? If not what? If I can, what happens the next night when Retrospect wants to backup? Do I need to go through the same thing or can it just start on the second disk? 2. Backing up Documents of other machines on the network. I am backing up the files of other mahcines nightly. These fiels are stored on the server and then on Fri Afternoon, I want to back them up on CD-RWs. What is the best way to do this? I know there is a tool to copy backups to a different media, but I want it to be as easy as possible to restore. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. You can mix CD-R and CD-RW within a CD backup set. Retrospect will incrementally backup the changes. Depending on how much data is changing daily, you may need to add another CD daily, weekly or monthly. It's all relative to the actual change amount. If you know that there is not enough room on the current member for the next scheduled backup (you can see how much space is left on the media by going to Configure > Backup Sets and get Properties on the set); you can go to Configure > Backup Sets > Properties > Options > Actions > Skip. The next time the backup runs, it will expect a blank piece of media which will become the next member in the set. Quote: 2. Backing up Documents of other machines on the network. Set up a backup script (Automate > Manage Scripts) to backup the server files every Friday to a CD backup set. If you'd like to erase the media each Friday for reuse, set your script schedule to use a Recycle backup. Many common operations are outlined in screen-by-screen tutorials: http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=kbase&ACTION=KBASE&id=27640
