Waiting for TCP/IP

Recommended Posts

I have recently upgraded to Retrospect 5 Workgroup Backup having used older versions for years without too many problems. However, with the new set up my OS 9.x clients imtermittently drop off the Retrospect Network. Consequently on every backup clients are missed.

The only way I have discovered of getting them back on is by removing the TCP/IP preferences and re-enterering the DHCP server address and re-booting. This usually works but some machines still seem to drop off on occasions.

We have no other network issues the Apple Server is ok and the affected Macs can log on to each other and Windows servers around the company.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem, please?

How are you adding the clients to Retrospect? By IP Address or through the Backup Clients on Network window? If you add by address, and the IP address changes, Retrospect will not be able to find the clients.

What is the lease time-out on the IP addresses? If the IP address times out, and is not renewed promptly, the machine may not be found on the network.

I am adding by using the Backup Clients on Network. I do not think it is the lease time-out as the clients can disappear quite quickly, then come back after a day or so, sometimes staying for a few hours and sometimes disappearing quite quickly. I would say it was the network but as I said, other services are ok.

When this happens, try to ping the other computer and see if you get a response. There are many free ping utilites on the internet, if you do not already have one. We have links to a few on our website:

WhatRoute is pretty user friendly.

Try installing the application, as a test, on another computer and log in a few clients - do you see the same behavior?

Just to confirm, you're running the application on OS 9? Please provide more information about your configuration - product versions for application and client. OS versions, etc.

Everything pings ok! Retrospect Backup is running on a beige G3 with OS 9.2. The clients which disappear are running OS 9.1 and 9.2 and normally only use Quark Xpress and Microsoft Word, although we also have an iMac running OS 9.2 which disappears more than any other, luckily not much changes on it as it is used mainly for disk copying, generating CDs etc. We also use Extensis Suitcase Server and Suitcase is on all the Macs. The Macs running OSx do not suffer from the problem. I haven't yet tried running Retrospect on any other Macs yet but will try to do this soon . . . we're snowed under with work at the moment.

As a side-note. The Mirror door Macs do freeze on overnight back-ups if we allow them to go into any "sleep" modes.

Right, back to it. I've updated all the workstations to the latest version of their particular OS, carbon version, etc. and deleted old TCP/IP preferences and created new ones and the problem has not gone away, but it happening much less frequently and when it does they usually reappear after the next re-start (this was not happening before).

It appears to me to be related to some other software or extension interfering with Retrospect, but I can't tie it down as it seems intermittent.

Anyone with similar problems, I would like to hear about it, I hate missing the occasional back-up, I'm bound to want a file that someone has deleted or overwritten (I'm trying to be polite, but use your imagination . . .).

Our main software is Quark Xpress using very few Xtensions.
