Error 501 (client not installed)

Recommended Posts

Three client Mac OS X machines are giving me the "Can't log in, error 501 (client not installed)" error when I try to add them to my Retrospect server.

Server machine is Mac OS X 10.2.4 with all updates available running Retrospect 5.0.238.

Client machines are running OS X 10.2.4 w/ all updates and Retrospect client 5.0.540.

The server machine sees the client as it normally would. I confirm the name. I then enter the passphrase, to which I get the resultant error 501.

I have tried the following:

1) Tossed out the client app and anything else that has "dantz or "retro" in the name. Rebooted. Then reinstalled the client. same problem.

2) Turned off the IP firewall on the client machines, even though port 497 was enabled.

3) I thought that the latest update, "Apple Security Update 2003-03-24 (SAMBA security)" might have been the problem and found it wasn't.

Any help would be appreciated.

This problem is not unique. I have a nearly identical setup and I'm having the same problem, but only on one workstation. Everything is running 10.2.4, including the server. 5 workstations log in correctly, but one workstation comes back with the same 501 error.

More info: The only software differences between this machine and the others is that it has the latest iPod software, and it is running stickies, otherwise the software is identical.

The hardware is identical to two other workstations that are functioning correctly (Dual 867, 768MB ram).

Dantz - please help!

Thanks,

Noah Miller

I'm having the same problem. Server is running 10.2.3, Retrospect 5.0.238.

Does fine backing up my system which is 10.2, with 5.0.536 client, but I get the error 501 on a client I'm trying to add who is on 10.2.4, 5.0.540.

So my scenario is identical to yours except I'm one version back on the Server OS.

Dantz needs to look at this. Or tell us how far back to downgrade our various software components...

Anyone else seeing this on a different configuration?

We have found a solution to the problem, at least for us. (Thanks, Steve!)

We enabled file sharing on the OS X clients and rebooted. Then we were able to connect them just fine. I checked the documentation and didn't see anything about requiring file sharing to run.

I am curious to see if the Apple Security Update 2003-03-24 had anything to do with this. These problems happened after that upddate was released.

just want to chime in here:

i saw the same problem yesterday configuring a clients new backup system. logged in 6 clients with no problem, then 1 kept coming back (error 501, client not installed)

yesterday i de-installed and re-installed the client several times, all to no avail, tried various combinations of rebooting between installs, deleteing prefs, etc. all with no luck.

came home, read posts here, then this am i tried again to log in the client and wouldnt you know, it worked on the first try.

as far as i know, the only change was time passing.

the server is on a beige g3 266 10.2.3 os, the client was on a FP Imac, dont know the os.

current rev. of Server and Client.

hate these kinda ghosty problems, but at least its working now.

I read this forum, too, and checked whether file sharing was on for the client I was having trouble with. It was on. I tried again to log him in, and it worked perfectly. Aside from just checking his file sharing, and having an overnight pass and another reboot, nothing changed.

Hmmm..... this is strange, indeed.

I too experience this problem. One out of every 10 or so client installs responds in this manner.

This occurs for both 10.1.5 and 10.2 systems.

Based on the experiences discussed here, maybe toggling file sharing off, then back on again might clear it up? I did this with a system I could not add last night. Tried adding it this morning. Received the 501 error. After the toggle, I was able to add it.

I too am receiving 501 Error (client running OS 10.2.6 and client vers 5.0.540; server running OS 10.2.8 and server version 5.0.238). Have tried reinstalls, reboots, and file sharing toggling.

Am OUTRAGED that even though i just installed over the weekend, Dantz wants to charge an incident fee because product was purchased over thirty days ago. This is an obnoxious policy: Dantz should be ashamed of themselves.

Pissed off,

phil
