Sony tape drive working for anyone in 10.1.3?

Recommended Posts

I got our new server up this week and found my Sony SDT-9000 not showiing up in 10.1.3 with my Adaptec SCSI card(s). All is fine in 9.2.2.

Most of the problems on this board forum seem to be concerning this setup.

Does anyone have a Sony tape drive functioning in 10.1.3? Firewire, USB, SCSI? Anyone?

We'll get this thing figured out.

I have managed to get ONE Sony SDT-10000 DDS4 Tape drive in an APS enclosure to work connected to an Adaptec 2930 in OS X 10.1.3 (50 pin card, 68 pin drive). If I connect two identical drives, however, it doesn't work -- ie, Retrospect doesn't see either drive, though both drives show up in Apple System Profiler.

I would like to echo tpayton's post. I also have a Sony SDT-9000 tape drive in an APS enclosure with an Apple provided Adaptec 2930CU SCSI card on OS X 10.1.3 and the latest Adaptec 1.1.0 drivers. Apple System Profiler shows the SCSI card but not the tape drive. I even tried changing the SCSI id of the tape drive with no luck. I successfully connected an old 350MB Maxtor SCSI disk drive in an APS enclosure to the 2930CU.

All suggestions are welcome.

If your storage device has a wide 68-pin interface, make sure it is connected to a wide 68-pin SCSI adapter. Many issues have been found when wide devices have been connected to a narrow 50-pin or 25-pin SCSI adapter.

This is noted on our device support page, and it may be why some configurations (SDT-10000 or SDT-11000 on 2930 cards) aren't working.

solved the problem of sony 9000 dds tape not working on 10.1.3

you need a firmware revision for the sony unit which u download from the sony site

i had 2 units, 1 working and the other not, i noticed they had different firmware which led me on the hunt. now they both work

the revision is 0601, joke is u need a windows machine running win 2000 to apply the firmware upgrade, and of course it needs a scsi card as well to mount your drive temporarily

gollings,

Glad to hear it. Can you reply with a url to get the firware update.

I'm assuming I can use the Adaptec SCSI card from my G4 in the PC. Fortunately we happen to have a Windows 2000 PC at my office, so I will do the firmware update and post the results.

Thanks,

Here is the URL for the sony Tape Drives:

Specifically for the 9000 here is the url for download firmware update.

It's Saturday today and I'm at home so I probably won't be able to apply the update until Monday. So if anyone is waiting to see if this will work I should know by Monday.

I followed gollings' suggestion about the firmware update. Retrospect 5.0 finds the tape drive (Configure -> Devices) even though it still does not show on the Apple System Profiler. My Sony SDT-9000 had firmware version 123 and it was upgraded to 601 (I must have bought one of the first ones out of the factory). I successfully backed up my disk.

The firmware update went without a hitch on a Windows 2000 machine. I had to take the Adaptec OEM 2930CU card out of my Mac and put it into the Windows machine.

I did the update to the Sony 9000 on a Windows 2000 machine. Worked great, it was a piece of cake. I downloaded the PC drivers for the Adaptec SCSI card that was in my Mac and that worked good too.

Retrospect for OS X has been backing up on our server throughout the day, with the SDT-9000 attatched to the Adaptec OEM 2930CU card. The speed is 60MB/minute (which I believe is about the maximum for the 9000, when writing uncompressed.)

Spread the word.
