dfsutherland
I'm the guy who couldn't get the combination of Retrospect Preview, AHA2940U2B, DLT1 Tape drive, OS X, and a G4 Digital Audio (dual 533) to work. I'd like to observe that the product version is MUCH better. It sees the tape drive. It talks to the tape drive. It can determine what backup set's tape is in the drive. It gets a 100% repeatable kernel panic on every backup attempt about 2 seconds after starting to write to the drive. I'll post the exact kernel error message when I get home this evening. I'll also send an official bug report to Dantz (of course). Dean

No surprise there. The Adaptec build, Apple branded 2940U2B SCSI host adapter is not compatible with Mac OS X. Information on the Adaptec web site makes clear that they have no plans on upgrading their version of this card, and Apple has made no offers or promises that they will update the card that they sold (in machines released _before_ OS X was available). SCSI in OS X is a whole different animal. Dave
IrenaS
Here's some information from another post that explains why: That card is not supported by Apple or Adaptec for use with OSX! The Adaptec version of the card (I think it's the 2940U2W?) is listed in the Adaptec website as no plans to be supported: http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/product/markeditorial.html?cat=%2fTechnology%2fMacintosh&prodkey=mac_osx_info&type=Technology And Apple has said nothing about an upgrade program, which at least Adaptec promises that it will be offering... jquiros
beautiful! i decided to go ahead and move up to OS X after trying Retr 5.0 in OS 9 and getting sooo many elem.c-812 errors. So i upgrade our backup server to 10 and start from scratch logging our 50+ clients in, etc... and now i have the same thing. Kernel panic shmernel panic 'cause of an unsupported scsi card.....! dfsutherland
My approach to this problem has been to acquire a 29160 SCSI card. According to both Dantz, Adaptec and Apple this IS fully supported under OS X. We'll see what happens... Getting Retrospect running on OS X is the LAST thing standing between me and running OS X full time on both machines here at home. I really want to get this working. jquiros
i think i'll do the same. hopefully tomorrow i can find a store that carries the card in the d.c. metro area so i can have a complete backup over the weekend :-) i went to an apple store right by my office this eve...they don't carry scsi cards, or much other than sw, complete systems, and ipods, etc... must be part of that "digital hub appliance" thing apple's got going... mattriley
The Adaptec 2940U2b card IS compatible with OS X and OS X Server - the card works without installing any additional drivers. I know this because I am currently using one of these cards (used to be 2 of them) in an OS X Server box right now. The card connects both internal U2 hard drives and an external UltraWide RAID. No problems with crashes or anything of the sort related to this card in this configuration. The problems arise when using Retrospect to backup to a tape drive that is connected to the 2940U2b card. I've posted on this problem before on these forums and also found additional info about the problem here as well. Basically, Retrospect writes data in larger chunks than the driver for the card supports and it causes a kernel panic whenever a backup starts (immediatly, actually, when Retrospect begins to write to the tape drive attached to the 2940U2b card). My solution was to purchase an Adaptec 29160 card and hook the tape drive up to that. I installed the latest drivers for this card (available from adaptec's web site) and have had smooth sailing ever since. Retrospect now happily backs up the RAID and 2 internal drives every night, and with good speed (usually better than 300 MB/min to the DLT7000 mechanism). I haven't tried (had to do) a restore of any sort yet, but verification is ON, so the data on the tape should be good. My two cents... -Matt
dfsutherland
In spite of being officially unsupported by Dantz, I'm getting good results with a 29160 card. My server is running OS X 10.1.4. The 29160 card (with the latest Adaptec firmware) is connected to an external DLT1 drive, which is the only device attached to the card. I get about 180MB/sec backing up local disks to the DLT1. Backup of up to 13GB (with verify) and restore of up to 5GB (with verify) have all run successfully. This leaves me wondering why the 29160 is on the unsupported list. It's working great for me!
