Backing up the same file in OS9 & OSX

Recommended Posts

As a new user to this forum please ignore my ignorance if this question has already been answered.

I am trying to backup a file, or in my case a folder of files, on both an OS9 and OSX machine. I'm used to in OS9 that once I backup a file, Retrospect recognizes that it is backed-up up and just writes it to the snapshot. However now with OSX it seems that if I take that drive and put it on an OSX machine to do a network backup it writes the entire folder full of files again to tape as if it has never been backed up. Once it is backed-up in OSX it behaves as normal. This isn't really desirable to me because our facility is going to be heading toward a mixed facility with drives that will be moving about between systems with up to 120gig's worth of information on each.

Is there any way around this, or is it just the nature of the beast with OSX?

Any help or enlightenment would be greatly appreciated.

You are not alone. I'm having the same problem. See an earlier post I made. As of yet I've had no replies. I'm not even doing a network backup. I'm only trying to continue doing incremental backups to a set I started while booted in OS 9. Right now my only work around is to boot OS 9, run the backup and then boot back into OS X. Very annoying!

Very annoying is right.

I wonder if Dantz even thought about this problem. I would hope to think that they would. Obviously they know that there would be a transition period and some facilities like ours couldn't switch until our Programs were ported to X. And even then wouldn't switch every computer overnight.

My solution for the moment is to NOT back up in X. Just take the drives down and put them up on the remaining 9 systems. Once all the new systems are in place with X. Start an entirely new storage set a lot sooner then I would like to.

I will also continue to backup using OS 9. Some of the data in my Backup Set is no longer live which means I would have to restore it first so I could then do a complete full backup using OS X. I don't think so! Not only don't I want to have to do a full backup of many GB of data but I have also found a speed issue. I hope Dantz comes up with a workaround real soon!
