Insufficient Storage Space for Open File Backup

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to backup a client's computer via a multiserver, open file backup license v7.7. It's a mixed enviornment of Windows 7, Vista, XP. This client's computer is the only Windows 7 computer on the network. When doing a backup, I get the following:

T-14: VssWSnapVolume: DoSnapshotSet failed, winerr -2147212513, error -3045

Can't use Open File Backup option for OS (C:) on Dell, error -3045 ( there is insufficient storage space to complete the operation)

There is 45.5GB (out of 97) free on the source drive, and 3TB available on the destination drive. Upon checking the event viewer, I have this error:

Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error querying for the IVssWriterCallback interface. hr = 0x80070005, Access is denied.

. This is often caused by incorrect security settings in either the writer or requestor process.

Operation:

Gathering Writer Data

Context:

Writer Class Id: {e8132975-6f93-4464-a53e-1050253ae220}

Writer Name: System Writer

Writer Instance ID: {320cb735-d289-48be-9689-7a8cf5c865e0}

It seemes like a security issue? maybe? I've tried changing the logon settings for the VSS service, but that created "unknown Windows OS error."

Can someone help me out with this?

When using Backup Open Files, Retrospect stores files on the client's boot hard drive. The boot drive is normally C:, but there is no guarantee.

So, how much free space is there on the client's boot drive?

Have you tried running CHKDSK on the client's boot drive?

Thank You for responding!

We have 45.5GB free (out of 97GB total) on C:

chkdsk did find errors so I tried another backup, but received the same errors.

The free space should be enough (assuming that C: is indeed the boot drive).

Now, was CHKDSK able to correct the errors?

Hi Katie,

I suspect you may have a permissions issue.

Sounds like you are backing up clients from a server.

You dont mention whether you have a domain or not.

Retrospect runs on the backup srver either under the System Account or as a specific user as determined in COnfig>Prefs>Security

So I supect that this user may not have permissions on your clients.

If you have a domain I suggest creating a special user for retrospect, give it at least backup operator permissions, if not admin.

If no domain you may need use a common machine administrator account, or create a common account on all the clients.

See the Manual >Ch1 > Creaating Retro user Account

and Ch9 > Administratin > Preferences > Security for more on this

HTH
