File duplication if I move files

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

We currently have a mirrored RAID drive which is partitioned into two volumes.

Each volume gets backed up daily. If we move a file from one partition to the other, will the file be backed up again when moved to the second partition? Or does Retrospect recognise it is the same file, and leave it ?

Thanks in advance

If the copying/moving process retains all of the file attributes Retrospect uses in comparing files (name, size, creation date, modification date, etc.), and if you have chosen the appropriate matching options in your backup script, Retrospect shouldn't back up the file a second time.

Note that this requires the filesystems on the two volumes to be of the same type (but not necessarily of the same size) so that the metadata can match. If the filesystems are different, then the time granularity may not be the same, the permissions models on the two filesystems may not be the same, etc.
