Server leaving files on a Windows client

I am running Retrospect 6.1.230 server on a Mac running 10.4.11. I'm currently having problems backing up Windows XP clients in that the backup will get most of the files, but not all. The log indicates that X amount of files were not backed up, amounting to Xmb of data.

 

I originally thought this was due to Outlook running on the Windows machines. But I've been working with a user to find a time when she was at her machine and could quit out of Outlook when she got the backup notice, and not start it back up until she got the complete notice.

 

This ended up with fewer files not backed up properly, but I'm still missing some, and this is really beginning to concern me. Especially as we had a Windows laptop's hard drive die last week.

 

I ONLY back up data files. I do not back up system files. We basically back up folders that end in "Documents," picking up both Mac's "Documents" folders and Windows XP's "My Documents' folders that way.

 

I'm running 7.6 and on a few select clients, 7.5 versions of the Windows clients.

 

Any advice would be appreciated.

The second user listed here is the one who quit out of her Outlook today. Prior to today she was getting reports in the log file of 192mb of files not being backed up.

Retrospect 6.x for Mac cannot back up Windows files that are in use by another application. You should examine the files that were not backed up to determine whether you would consider them important. For example, you may well not care about all those temporary files. (We use a selector in our backup scripts that specifically excludes temporary files.)

 

For files that are important, your users will need to be instructed to periodically quit the relevant applications so that the files can be backed up.
