kaisere
My setup: OS 10.5.8 Server running the Retrospect Engine that backs up a OS 10.6.3 desktop client (no problems there) and a wireless MacBook Pro 10.6.3 client. The MacBook fails every time during a Proactive Backup with a -519 (unknown) error. The backup fails whether I use multicast to find the client or add it by address. I can control the Server from the MacBook using Remote Desktop. The MacBook can connect to the Server using FTP, SSH, ServerAdmin, AFP, and SMB. It also uses the Server for RADIUS, DNS, DHCP, Time Machine and Mail services. The Firewall is active on the Server; however, no ports are blocked. It is active only for the adaptive firewall. Here is part of the log: + Normal backup using MacBook Pro at 4/6/2010 1:23 PM (Execution unit 1) TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847851520|696847851520], used [303013060608|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847851520|696847851520], used [303013060608|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847851520|696847851520], used [303013060608|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847851520|696847851520], used [303013060608|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847851520|696847851520], used [303013060608|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847851520|696847851520], used [303013060608|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847851520|696847851520], used [303013060608|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847851520|696847851520], used [303013060608|303334469856], To Media Set MacBook Pro Backup... ifacOptValue: 'yDOW' undefined, using default value 2 soctSetThread: socket thread now 0xf2729000 soccOpen: socket send buffer size is 65536 soccOpen: socket recv buffer size is 65536 soccCallback: connected... !Trouble reading files, error -519 ( unknown) vlocRDiskDoFileCreate: device number = 0xe000b TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847839232|696847839232], used [303013072896|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847839232|696847839232], used [303013072896|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847839232|696847839232], used [303013072896|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847839232|696847839232], used [303013072896|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847839232|696847839232], used [303013072896|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847839232|696847839232], used [303013072896|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847839232|696847839232], used [303013072896|303334469856], TMacVol::GetInfo: vol /Volumes/MacPro Backup, blocksize [4096|4096], total [999860912128|999860912128], vfree [696847839232|696847839232], used [303013072896|303334469856], 4/6/2010 1:56:57 PM: Execution incomplete Remaining: 44487 files, 6.0 GB Completed: 0 files, zero KB Performance: 0.0 MB/minute Duration: 00:33:53 (00:33:26 idle/loading/preparing) I'm at a loss. Maser
Is the laptop changing it's IP address on the wireless network frequently? Your examples of using the laptop to connect *to the engine* don't necessarily matter in this case (because I'm assuming the engine machine has a static IP address.) Can you assign (temporarily) a static IP address to the wireless machine to see if that makes a difference?
kaisere
Thanks for the prompt reply. While the laptop does obtain its IP address from the DHCP server, it has a static map, and I've never seen it change. Regardless, I can try a static IP. The engine machine does have a static IP address.
Maser
Oh, and what version of client software do you have installed on the MBP?

Pforne
I would recommend that you create a location on each of the laptops that ONLY includes the network adapter you are using when you back them up. Apparently the IP stack gets confused when laptops are put to sleep on one adapter then awakened to use another. For testing, you might also have the user restart once they get set up in the office.
