kswisher
I have repeatedly come across instances where I set up a folder exclusion rule, yet RS8 still backs up some limited subset of the folder contents. Is this a known issue? Example: I have a rule that excludes users Music folder. Folder Mac Path contains "/kswisher/Music/" rule.png I then browse the resulting initial backup and see the Music folder has no green checkmark next to it, but it appears to have some 895 MB of files backed up. The Music folder contains some 42 GB of files so this is a small subset of the actual folder contents. See screen shot. browse_backup.png If I then restore the Music folder from backup, I can confirm this subset of files were indeed backed up. See screen shot. restored_music_folder.png This is not unique to the Music folder as I have similar problems excluding other folders.
Maser
That's pretty odd. Backing up the "Users" folder as a Favorite Folder for my clients, I've used the following in my exclusion list without the problems you are showing: Folder Mac Path contains /Users//Movies/ or Folder Mac Path contains /users//pictures/ Do you get any different behavior if you change it to "is" instead of "contains"? Or try (as an experiment) Folder Mac Path contains iTunes Music ?
kswisher
Forgot to mention, using an Intel Imac, MacOS 10.5.8. Backing up the local machine that RS server component is running on. Tried Folder Mac Path is "/kswisher/Music/" last night. Music folder was not excluded at all (as I suspected). I currently have "Users" folder as a Favorite Folder and using that as source in the script instead of Mac HD. Under this situation, for the "is" criteria to work, which of these is correct? Folder Mac Path is "/kswisher/Music/" Folder Mac Path is "/Users/kswisher/Music/" Folder Mac Path is "/Volumes/Mac HD/Users/kswisher/Music/" Or for folder, do you need to exclude the trailing backslash? PS: Having similar exclusion issues with /Library/Caches/ folder. Edited March 29, 2010 by Guest Add trailing "/" comment and PS:
Maser
From what I tested here (and confirmed with somebody at EMC), if you are going to use "is", you need to use: Folder Mac Path is "/Volumes/Mac HD/Users/kswisher/Music/" Even if it's a "Favorite Folder" -- which doesn't make sense that it's necessary, but that worked from my testing here. *Contains* /kswisher/Music/ will work, though. rhwalker
I have repeatedly come across instances where I set up a folder exclusion rule, yet RS8 still backs up some limited subset of the folder contents. Is this a known issue? Precisely what version of Retrospect 8 engine do you have? (8.x.x) What architecture (PPC or Intel) for the machine running Retrospect 8? Is this a local backup / restore or a backup / restore using Retrospect client? If Retrospect client is involved, version? Russ

If Retrospect client is involved, version? Russ Using an 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo iMac, MacOS 10.5.8 as the RS8 server. Retrospect Single Server 8 for Macintosh, Version 8.1 (build 626). Am testing my rules by backing up boot drive of above mentioned machine that RS8 server component (and GUI client) is running on, to an external disk. Restoring to a folder on server machine boot drive. Have not yet looked to see if experience the same on clients. Am lucky to even get a client backup as it seems every time I attempt to duplicate rules I successfully use with RS6 to prune what I backup, I end up backing up nothing. That said, I just checked and it looks like I do need to update some of my Mac clients to 6.3.027. Have intel, PPC and Windows clients. Maser
Feel free to post a screen-shot of your rules that aren't working. That usually helps to get a feel for why they might not be (and a chance to try to replicate them on somebody else's system...)
