sussox
Hello! Im trying to copy part of a mediaset (860GB) with a copy backup script to a new empty mediaset. The new set contains two members, 750GB and 430GB (total 1180GB free). When i run the Copy backup all it does is "Needs media" and if i navigate to the correct set it still wount start the backup. Why isnt it working? There is enough room on the set.
sussox
I now tried to create a single 900GB member in the destination mediaset. It still goes "Needs media" when starting the backup..
sussox
Hrm.. Retrospect is not updating the freespace info on the destination.. There is 1.35TB free but retrospect is only seeing 766GB. How can i make it update? The destination is a AFP-mounted ReadyNAS. I tried restarting the retro-engine, no luck. Also i cant find a place to remove and re-add a share? (maybe then it will update) Can this be done? Edited March 25, 2010 by Guest
CallMeDave
The destination is a AFP-mounted ReadyNAS It's a bit unclear exactly what steps you have taken and what steps you are taking now. Your Media Set now contains one Member, and that Member has been created on this NAS device, yes? Assuming so, the path to this Member (of Media Set "[color:purple]Foo") would be: [color:orange]/Volumes/ReadyNASVolume/Retrospect/Foo/1-Foo/ Is the first part of this path ([color:purple]/Volumes/ReadyNASVolume/) exactly the same in _both_: Sources->ReadyNASVolume->Summary(tab)->Path(field) and Media Sets->Foo->Members(tab)->Location(column) ? sussox
One member, yes. And its created on the now empty readynas (1300GB free) Attached screenshots of the set and the nas-description below. Catalog and mediaset is in the same location. (/Volumes/nas-3/2009)
sussox
Now when i found the NAS under sources i tried removing it and re-adding it and now all the free space shows up. But why doesn't it update free space on the fly?
CallMeDave
it update free space on the fly? No. The idea is you use the little pencil icon to "edit" the Member, in order to tell Retrospect whatever new amount of volume size you want to dedicate to backup storage. sussox
Well yes, with the members. But when Retrospect don't update the destination(NAS) until i remove it and re-add it its kind of irritating. As it works now i can't add any new space at all to the member, even when there was 700GB free on the destination. I had to go into sources and remove the NAS and then re-add it for the free space to show.

Simply because the steps you took resulted in success does not prove that success requires those steps. We often read users stating "I had to restart the computer..." when in reality there were solutions that didn't require a system reboot. I've had instances of Members showing zero available space, which I was able to solve with a Catalog Repair. YMMV. Dave
CallMeDave
Catalog and mediaset is in the same location A Media Set is the combination of a [color:purple]Catalog File and the backup [color:purple]storage Media. But if you are storing your Catalog file on the same Volume as an active Member you might see problems. I've experienced odd Member behavior when I've tried that. Dave Yep, and I notice that the political rancor in this country exploded at the same time that Retrospect 8 was announced, but I don't believe that the former was an effect caused by the latter. sussox
So, what is the correct way to get it to show free space? Even if I deleted the entire set and tried to make a new one it didn't update the free space. (This was being done with the NAS totally empty of other files) Edited March 27, 2010 by Guest
CallMeDave
Even if I deleted the entire set and tried to make a new one it didn't update the free space Without bothering about any existing Media Set that your forget or not, what are the exact steps you take when you create a new Media Set and add its first Member? The should be something such as: - Media Sets - Click Giant candy sized "Add" "+" button - From the foolishly multi-purpose drop down sheet select "Media Type" as "Disk" and provide a name and path for the Catalog. - "Add a new member to this Media Set" drop-down sheet - Select any previously added Source volume - NOTE SIZE USAGES AND ADJUST AS DESIRED - Click "Add" Are these steps similar to yours? Where is the "update the free space" issue?
sussox
I followed EXACTLY those steps, and did so ~10 times to be certain, with diffrent names of the sets and such. But when the set is created (see previous screen shot http://forums.dantz.com/fbbuploads/1269590372-Picture_12.png) there is about 700GB free space missing, even though i typed 100% as size. Retrospect don't see that free space, as i said earlier. UNTIL i remove and re-added the NAS. When i navigate the NAS in the Finder, there is 1385GB free, not only 766 (as in the screen shot)
CallMeDave
there is about 700GB free space missing, even though i typed 100% as size What happens if you type something >766 as the size (instead of using the percentage field)? sussox
Same, only 766,6 is shown as free.
Maser
If you run "Verify Disk" with Disk Utility -- does it report any problems with the NAS? How is the NAS formatted?
sussox
As it is a NAS (ReadyNAS 1100) There is no disk utility. It is managed via the web and the volumes are mounted with afp or smb. I tried with a second ReadyNAS now, and get the same problem. *Create mediaset *Add member (430 GB free) *Delete 80GB of other data from the NAS via the finder. (517 GB free in Finder) *Create new mediaset in Retrospect *Add member (still only 430 GB free) Finder shows 517 GB free. The NAS is formatted ext3 default.
