Antti
Hi, Which versions of Retrospect (even on different operating systems) are compatible with each other? By this I mean both the backups and the catalog files and not just backwards compatibility but the ability of an older version to use the backups of a newer version. Isn't this kind of info supposed to be somewhere on the Retrospect manual or the release notes? I couldn't find anything about this. Some threads I found: http://forums.dantz.com/showtopic.php?tid/33463 and http://forums.dantz.com/showtopic.php?tid/33463. According to the first one 7.6 <-> 7.7 <-> 8.0 should work, but the other one doesn't exactly confirm it. I hope EMC has something to say about this. If there are plans to maintain the compatibility between old and upcoming versions in the future, I hope that info can be shared.
rhwalker
Once you've used a backup set with 7.7, you can't go back to 7.6. See the Read Me: EMC Retrospect 7.7 for Windows Read Me Upgrading from a Previous Version of Retrospect Older Backup Sets: If you are an upgrade customer, you can use your older Backup Sets with Retrospect 7.7. However, once you use a Backup Set with Retrospect 7.7, you can no longer access it from earlier versions of Retrospect. Russ
Antti
Thanks, I had not found that piece of information. It's not enough, though. One probable outcome for us would be that tapes made with Retrospect 8.0 on Mac would be read on Windows v. 7.7 (not the public beta out now). Is this possible, would it screw up the catalogs? Mayoff
8.1 and 7.7 tapes are compatible with each other. You just need to perform a catalog rebuild on the platform you will be accessing the tapes with. I do not know what public beta you are using. EMC does not have any public beta's for Retrospect at this time. 8.0 is not the current version. You should be using the latest 8.1 version. Richy_Boy
I think he is making reference to what EMC call a fully tested release of 7.7, which most of us have now removed from our networks as it was, and is, even months after the initial release... crap. At least MS seem to have got their shop in order, lets hope the same can be said for EMC/Dantz/Retrospect at their next attempt.. Rich ps. Don't worry, I'll stop ranting once this happens. Antti
8.1 and 7.7 tapes are compatible with each other. Thanks for that. The beta I mentioned is of course, as Rich noticed, the new Windows version. There's so many problems, that it does not give an impression of a thoroughly tested application. And, your product is a backup software, after all. I do have experience with other solutions. In comparison R7.6 is not bad at all. I really hope you have Retrospect fixed as soon as possible.
