TimNielsen
I'm sorry if this has been covered. I've just installed Retrospect on a new computer, and I'm trying to get it to import my previous catalog files (which were made with Retrospect 8). I can't find anywhere in the program to actually import them. When I double click one, it launches Retrospect but gives me the error: "The document “Show Archive.rbc†could not be opened. Retrospect cannot open files in the “Disk Media Set Catalog†format." What the hell!!!??? Retrospect can't open files in it's own format!? I'm a bit at a loss. I want to update the backup incrementally, but how can I do that if I can't even get Retrospect to load the catalog. Any pointers or ideas would be appreciated. I know I'm not a power user, but I'm wracking my brain just to get the dumb catalog file loaded!
TimNielsen
OK, I think I figured it out, sorry. I was able to 'locate' in the Media Sets and link it to the new catalogs. Ignore me!
rhwalker
Sounds like a manual would have helped.
TimNielsen
Actually I did look in the manual I have and couldn't find it. But thanks for your intensely helpful and condescending reply.
rhwalker
Actually I did look in the manual I have and couldn't find it. But thanks for your intensely helpful and condescending reply. I am genuinely sorry that you misunderstood my reply because it certainly was not intended to be condescending; perhaps I was just being too subtle. There is no manual, and I was just pointing out how helpful a manual might have been if a manual existed. See this email from five months ago: Where the @#%& is my Retrospect 8 User's Guide? Again, I'm sorry you misunderstood my reply. When I am condescending, it's very clear that is my intent, and it wasn't my intent here. TimNielsen
Russ, then I do apologize, I did misunderstand! I was frustrated myself at how little the 'quick start' seemed to have had in it. Sorry, a bit on edge tonight, and since I'm a new poster, thought someone was poking fun at me. Anyway, sorry! I'm glad I figured it out. The main problem for me, is that I only fire it up with my LTO4 drive occasionally to update my backups, and usually forget how to use it in between each one. So I was stumbling a bit to think how to get these catalogs back in with a fresh install of Retrospect. I think I've got it now. Tim
rhwalker
If you have problems, please post back and we will try to help. These user-to-user support forums are all there is (other than calling EMC support, and they are pretty good, too) in the absence of a manual. Just a suggestion: Be sure to back up your catalogs and your config file (preferences). Retrospect 8 is still a bit immature, and those can get corrupted due to bugs. It will save you a lot of time if you back them up. Russ
TimNielsen
Thanks Russ, will do. I was checking about emailing them, but it seems like all their support is 'pay' based, unless I missed something, which is why I was glad to find this forum. I appreciate the help! During this period when Retrospect 8 is a bit shaky, and in the absence of documentation, they are a bit lax about charging. The EMC Retrospect support group is doing a heroic job right now - it's not their fault that the product is a bit immature. Russ
