Volumes won't unmount after backup

Recommended Posts

I have a file backup set on a Firewire hard drive. After backing up local volumes on my PB G4 to this set and quitting RS, I can't unmount any of the (non-boot) volumes that were backed up or the one that contains the backup. I get a dialog saying the volumes are in use. I'm logged in as an administrator. Sometimes relaunching the Finder will free the volumes, other times I have to kill the hdid processes manually. This has been going on for months. I can't find a reference to the bug anywhere.

Thanks in advance for replies.

I just tried a quick test with a FireWire hard drive, 10.2 and Retrospect 5.0.205 and wasn't able to reproduce this problem. I saved a file backup set to the drive, ran a backup of about 100 MB, and quit Retrospect. I was able to unmount the drive without problems.

Where do you have Retrospect installed?

Are you able to unmount the drive after copying data to it in the Finder?

Are there errors in the backup? Is Retrospect actually quitting?

I'm using 10.1.5. The problem is not 100% reproducible in my setup, but it's more than 50%.

On the boot volume, which is also one of the source volumes. It's on the internal drive of a PB G4, if that matters.

Yes.

There are always a few comparison errors in files that have changed.

Yes, unless it spawns other threads that I don't know about.

Maybe a shell guru can suggest a command to show which processes are using the volumes?
