Trying to get started

I recently installed Express 5.6 on my Dell notebook with Win XP. But when I tried to do a "Backup" from the Immediate Backup window, I got "Sorry, no disc storage devices found". I have a Toshiba CDRW/DVD combo drive that shows as supported for version 5.6 on the web site, so I was puzzled by this. Going to Config > Devices > Status tab, it says "No backup devices found". The Environment tab, however, shows a 0:0, Product ATDA04-0 (whatever that is) and a 0:1, Toshiba, CDRW/DVD drive as expected. Neither device has anything showing under "Driver". I then downloaded and executed the Retrospect Driver Update 3.1 for Retrospect 5.6, but the same things happened. Can anybody tell me why I'm not getting anywhere with this???

This drive is not supported with Retrospect at this time.

Dantz goes through a rigorous qualification process with every drive we test. This means that not every drive will be qualified and we can never guarantee that a particular device will be supported. For a list of the drives that are currently compatible with Retrospect software, please check our device compatibility guide at:

I did check your web site hardware guide, and it shows my drive is supported under 5.6, with "driver update" = 2.8.105. On the Environment tab, the line for my drive shows "Version = 1D13", but the driver is blank. So, what does this really mean? If the drive itself is supported, is there something about the version that is the problem? The device notes on the hardware guide say it ships with numerous versions of firmware, not all being compatible, but that "firmware 1001 works". Will there be any effort to make other versions work? Am I just plain out of luck with this? Do I just trash the software and move on to something else? I've got a Dell notebook, so you'd expect there'll be a lot of these around...

Sorry for the misunderstanding. You are correct, your drive is supported with the firmware limitations you noted.

Can you confirm whether or not the RDU file is loading? Go to the Operations Log (Ctrl - L). Find an entry where Retrospect launched. Directly below this entry you should see a notation about the Driver Update loading. If the RDU (Retrospect Driver Update) is not loading, try downloading the file again and follow the enclosed Read Me instructions for proper installation.
