Huw_1
I've done the initial back up of some of my Photoshop files but when checking to see how I back them up again, inorder than any amentments to the files (which are none at the moment) will be made, I'm asked to insert another disc. I was expecting it to say something like "No amendments needed". I must add that after I had done the initial back up I decided to change the name of the source file, but I made sure that R. E. knew the new name. Is this what has caused the problem?
AmyJ
Matching is the scheme for comparing file attributes to determine whether files are identical, which then allows intelligent copying to avoid redundancy. Retrospect uses several matching criteria to find new or changed files. If one of the criteria has been changed, Retrospect will back up the file again. On Windows, Retrospect looks at creation date and time, modified date and time, size and name. If match only in same location option is set, Retrospect matches on the path, volume name and drive letter also. I'm not sure what you mean by: "after I had done the initial back up I decided to change the name of the source file, but I made sure that R. E. knew the new name" If you change the name of a source file, Retrospect will back it up again. If the disk you were using on the first initial backup was full, got an error, or was marked as missing, Retrospect would ask for a new disk to continue a backup. Huw_1
Thank you AmyC for that usefull information. I must say, although computers can do great things these days, instructions for how to use them and their software are not so great. They assume much too much knowledge of the user. It's taken me half a day to get anywhere with this programme. Anyway, that's that moan out of the way. I realised that the name of my source file was not really appropriate so I decided to change it. I then tried to change it in R. E's memory and I thought I had succeeded but I most probably failed (please don't ask me what I did). It seems that my changing of the name of the source file has caused the problem so now I would like to erase the CD and start again but, as usuall, I can find no information on that subject. You're apparently expected to get it right first time. Sorry I'm doing a lot of complaining.
Huw_1
Ok, I'm still having problems. This time I didn't change anything and now I click the Backup button in the Retrospect Express Directory and click on Backup in the Immediate Backup window and I'm then asked to insert another CD. In the Immediate Backup window the Source, Destination and Selecting are all correct. I'm shown a window with the name of my CD, which is Photoshop (A-G), as its heading and it states "Please select a new disc... It will be named "2-Photoshop (A-G)"". It shows the name of my CD Writer and underneath that it shows the name of my CD. If I click on that and click on the Proceed button I'm told "You can't use 1-Photoshop (A-G). It already belongs to a backup set." Any ideas what's going on? In your message you mention "If match only in same location option is set, Retrospect matches on the path, volume name and drive letter also.". I can't find that option. AmyJ
You can do a "Recycle" backup, which erases your catalog and your media and starts the backup over from scratch. While in the Immediate Backup window, click on options, and choose Recycle. Retrospect will then allow you to overwrite the first disc. The 'match only same location' option mentioned is actually in the higher versions, and not available in Express. My apologies. You may find the User's Guide (in PDF) format helpful. It is located in your Retrospect Program folder. Most beginners also seem find the tutorials useful. http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=kbase&ACTION=KBASE&id=27640
Huw_1
Excellent!! That's what I need, the User's Guide, step by step instructions, and at first glance it seems to be a good one. I was thinking that all the help I could get was from the Help menu, which is not much help if you're just starting. I will work my way through that now, and the the tutorials site you gave. Thank you AmyC for pointing those out to me.
