Failed restore

Recommended Posts

I'm trialling v8 as a precursor to deciding on definitive backup solution. I have the server (xserve on 10.5.6) running the engine, the console and client, and also my late 2008 MacBook Pro (on 10.5.7) as a networked client. Everything is running the latest version (just updated it today).

Trying a restore operation restoring a folder to my MBP (very small - total of around 10MB) failed with the log reporting the following error:

+ Executing Restore Assistant - 5/21/09 11:34 AM at 5/21/2009 11:47 AM (Execution unit 1)

5/21/2009 11:47:05 AM: Connected to Matt’s MacBook

To volume Matts HD on Matt’s MacBook...

!Can't write to volume Matts HD on Matt’s MacBook, it's locked or protected

5/21/2009 11:47:06 AM: Execution incomplete

There is no apparent reason it should fail - on setting up the client I was required to authenticate, which I did, so the engine should have access to it as restore destination (it has access to it as backup source). I haven't used the Pkey method as I wanted to try it without that added complication - I was under the impression it wasn't required, merely optional?

Anybody any ideas?

Make sure the client panel settings are not set for Read access only.

Are you able to successfully restore the data to a local disk? Does it only fail restoring to the client disk?

What restore options are you using? Are you doing a restore to a new folder?

Aha - that might be the solution - the client app was set to Read Only in Preferences. Will give that a go.

For info was restoring to the destination it came from - as yet haven't tried a restore to a different location.

Just for reference, what's a proactive backup? Is that the same system from earlier versions of Retrospect that queries a client to see if it's on the network before backing it up at first available opportunity if it is? Or is it something completely different, lol?
