vecna42
I'm in the process of switching over to Mac OS X full-time, but the original 4GB partition I gave it a year ago is just too small. So I need to backup both OS 9 and OS X partitions, and swap the data on each. I'm still running Retrospect Desktop 4.2 on OS 9.2.2 -- can I safely backup and restore my OS X partition while running under OS 9? I'm concerned that it may actually copy all the files, but something weird will keep my OS X partition from booting up correctly once I've attemped to restore it. Thanks! AmyJ
Retrospect 4.x and earlier _cannot_ properly backup and restore OS X. You will need to upgrade to Retrospect 5.0, and run the backup while booted into OS X.
avit
I bought Retrospect Express 5, and I had this same concern so I emailed support. I specifically asked if it is safe to back-up and restore an OS X volume from OS 9. I specifically asked whether symbolic links, aliases, file ownership & permissions would be backed up and preserved upon restoring. I was told yes, that my OS X volume would be bootable upon restoring. I recently had to restore my system due to some directory corruption problem, and when I rebooted into OS X all of the symbolic links are plain text files containing the link path, all ownerships are root/unknown and all permissions are rwxr-xr-x! Obviously my system won't boot! Was I told a lie? Is there a way to restore my system properly or are the file attributes not in the backup? I thought this software would save me from having to spend time reinstalling every little thing! With the time it takes to backup to CD-RW in Retrospect, I could have saved myself a whole week by doing this manually! I'm very disappointed. AmyJ
Unfortunately, you were given misinformation, and we apologize. It wasn't intentional. I have contacted the manager of the Customer Service department to ensure that all representatives are aware that OS X cannot be backed up in OS 9 so this issue does not occur again. At this time, you will need to install your system and applications from scratch. Your data files can be restored.
