mansky99
Hi, I recently upgraded a PowerMac G4 (dual 1.25GHz) to Tiger (10.4.11). I had been running Retrospect 5.x on Jaguar and then Panther just fine. I then upgraded to Restropsect 6.1.230 and driver 6.1.15.101 and now cannot get Retrospect to complete a run at all. Retrospect 6.1 now just hangs after putting about 15Gb on a DDS-3 DAT tape (HP6563 DAT tape drive is connected via an Adaptec PowerDomain SCSI card to the PM G4). Retrospect 5.x would prompt for a new tape after the first one was filled. (Depending upon the no. of files that are compressed, a DDS-3 tape will fill up at around 12-15 Gb). Now, Retrospect 6.1 just hangs for me. Nothing is reported in either the Retrospect log or system.log. Is this a known problem on Tiger and Retrospect? Any tips or ideas on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated!! Ed
CallMeDave
HP6563 DAT tape drive is connected via an Adaptec PowerDomain SCSI cardIs this a known problem on Tiger and Retrospect? No, it's a known problem with Adaptec cards and Mac OS X. Adaptec is no longer supported since 10.2. You may have been lucky to have it running under Panther, but that luck appears to have ended with your upgrade to 10.4. The only truly reliable cards for Mac OS X are the ones from ATTO. mansky99
Hi Dave, Thanks for the info. I would never have guessed support for the Adaptec SCSI cards were dropped. Is the ATTO ExpressPCI UL4S Single U320 SCSI Host Adapter card supported by any chance? Ed
rhwalker
Yes. We have a UL4D in our Xserve and it has always worked fine. Same card, but with two channels.
mansky99
Thanks for the info! I found a UL4S on eBay so it sounds like swapping the Adaptec card for the ATTO card should do it me. Thanks!
rhwalker
Make sure that you update the ATTO firmware and driver from the ATTO web site.
mansky99
Hi Success! I've now got the ATTO SCSI card installed and Retrospect 6.1 now backs up my Tiger partition just fine. Speeds are up to double the old transfer rate on Panther (eg.55-60Mb/sec on 10.3.x for Adaptec 29160 vs. 68-92Mb/sec for 10.4.11 and ATTO. I did find that one needs to have Tiger 10.4.11, as well as, be upgraded to at least Java 1.4/1.5 Release 5 on OSX, then install the ATTO driver and config tool. Once upgraded and installed, the ATTO card is recognized and no kernel panics are observed. Thanks again for the tips! Ed
