jbmoral
After a server drive failure I'm needing to restore files from tape. I was able to copy the Retrospect catalog files from the old server across the network to both a Mac laptop (leopard) as well as a PC. Got the new drives installed in the server and reloaded the O/S (starting fresh). Also installed the latest version of Retrospect. I copied the catalog files from the laptop over to the server, but they aren't being recognized as Retrospect related files now. The Finder thinks they are UNIX executables. Any idea what the issue(s) could be? I'd really like to avoid rebuilding catalogs if I can especially since I have copies of them in 2 locations (3 now if you include the server they've been placed on). Thanks for any help! CallMeDave
I copied the catalog files from the laptop over to the server, but they aren't being recognized as Retrospect related files now. The Finder thinks they are UNIX executables. Retrospect catalog files are just standard Macintosh documents, with Type/Creator codes to bind to the correct application; Retrospect on the Macintosh does not use file extensions to associate files with applicaitons. If the Finder doesn't recognize them on a machine where the Retrospect application itself resides (and has thus been registered with OS X's Launch Services), then it sounds as if you've lost the metadata on the files. - How did you copy the files? jbmoral
Dave, I copied the files just clicking and dragging with the Finder. Here's exactly what I did. On the "old" server, I had the catalog files in a desktop folder. The icons for the catalog files were the "correct" ones. Then via the network, I used the Finder on my laptop to drag the folder on the server with the catalogs over to it. When the "new" server was up, I drug the folder from my laptop back over to the server. On the server now, the catalog files are all there but the icon associated with them looks like a Terminal session icon - a command line interface window. Let me know your thoughts! Thanks for the Type/Creator code BTW. -Jonathan
jbmoral
I think I'm headed in the right direction. I downloaded a utility that allowed me to modify the type/creator info on the catalog file and Retrospect is reading it now. It looks like my problem is solved. I'll post again with results.
