Erik Haugan
I have recently migrated our copy of Retrospect 6.1 to an Xserve with a brand new Tandberg StorageLibrary T24 with an LTO4 drive and 24 tape slots. The Tandberg is connected via an ATTO ExpressPCI UL5D SCSI card. All drivers and software versions have been updated. The behaviour happens on Mac OS X 10.5.4 and 10.5.5 After filling the slots with tapes, I set the drive to scan through the tapes. (I haven't put barcode labels on them yet.) For some reasons, Retrospect will become unresponsive every time. Some times after scanning only a couple of tapes, other times after scanning nine or ten. It doesn't appear to matter whether I start the scan manually, or it happens as part of a backup, the result is the same. Has anyone encountered this, or know where I should look to find the cause? rhwalker
You might want to contact ATTO because I understand that there have been some issues with Mac OS 10.5.x and the UL5D, and some people are reporting beta drivers / firmware for the UL5D that address some of the issues. I think that the problem is in 10.5.x, not the UL5D, but ATTO is trying to work around the Apple issues. Russ
Erik Haugan
Hmm, I've been in touch with Atto, and they have no known issues that affect my configuration. Their suggestion was to check with EMC, and see if there were any compatibility issues. I am currently testing the setup, to see if I can find any particular combination of factors that cause the problem. One interesting thing, is that the Tandberg StorageLibrary T24 presents the tape library as two banks of tapes. One bank with 12 tape slots, and one bank with 11 tape slots and a slot for inserting and ejecting tapes from the library. I am currently attempting to determine if having tapes in only one bank of slots will avoid the issue.
Erik Haugan
Well, for what it's worth, Retrospect went weird as soon as I inserted the 13th tape. It seems as though Retrospect has trouble handling more than 12 tapes in one tape library. Can anyone confirm this?
