Got new Mac and have clone of old Mac... where are my scripts?

Recommended Posts

I just got a new Mac and have installed Retrospect. Now I would really like to be able to restore all of my scripts and clients. I copied over the Retrospect folder from my clone that was in the Library folder and then re-launched Retrospect, nothing. No scripts or clients are there.

Where does Retrospect store all of this information? The current Retrospect folder contains 5 files:

LaunchRetroHlper

Operations Log

Retro.Config (6.0)

Retro.Icons (6.0)

retrorunfile

Maybe it's a permissions issue... what are the permissions on this folder supposed to be?

Thanks!!

Unclear what you did here, and especially unclear what you are talking about with the language "my clone that was in the Library folder". Please explain what you did in full detail.

It may be that you did things in the wrong order or that you did them improperly. You haven't provided any information about the version of Retrospect that was on the old machine, the version of Retrospect that you installed on the new machine, or how you did the install.

I suggest you start over. Here's how:

(1) uninstall Retrospect by using the uninstall option in the installer on the new machine.

(2) copy over the contents of /Library/Preferences/Retrospect from the old machine to the new.

(3) install the current version of Retrospect adn the Retrospect Driver Update ("RDU") from the EMC update page:

Retrospect updates

Give it a shot, let us know what happens.

Sorry about the confusion... I maintain a complete backup image of my Mac using SuperDupe! When I'm referring to a clone, I mean that I have an external hard drive that is an exact duplicate of my internal HD.

Anyway, on the new Mac I copied the Retrospect 6.1 folder from my clone to the Applications folder. I then launched Retrospect. I was prompted to enter my serial number at that time which I did. Once the application launched I had no scripts and no clients etc.

I then found the /Library/Preferences/Retrospect folder on my clone. I quit Retrospect on my new Mac and copied over the /Library/Preferences/Retrospect folder from the clone to the same location on the new Mac and relaunched Retrospect. Same result, no scripts or clients.

Any ideas on what to try next? Thanks!

Yes, exactly the steps that I suggested, which is not what you did.

See also page 162 of the Retrospect 6 User's Guide, and, in particular, the section entitled "Moving Retrospect", which details the steps to follow when moving Retrospect to a new machine, which is what you are doing.

By "same results" you mean that you were again prompted to enter a serial number, which you again entered?

What's the Creation Date on the config file (not the Modification Date)?

You should follow Russ' suggested steps; you'll know you did it right when you never have to enter a serial number.

Thanks for the input... it's working now.

Long story short, I did everything as I described but had to login as root user to get a useable copy of the /Library/Preferences/Retrospect folder from my clone to my new Mac. Apparently copying it as a local admin didn't work as it copied all of the files but the sizes were different while the timestamps were the same.
