Autostart doesn't work in Jaguar

Recommended Posts

Just FYI...don't know if this bug has been mentioned, but Retrospect 5 does not automatically launch when a script is scheduled to run on Jaguar build 6C115...which is supposedly the final build.

I reinstalled it to no availl. It does however run the script as soon as Retrospect is started..

I'm sure a patch will be issued, but just wanted to point it out.

Due to core structural changes between OS 10.1.x and 10.2, the current version of Retrospect will not be compatible with 10.2. We are actively working on a release of Retrospect which will fully support Apple's next big OS release, Jaguar 10.2.

An exact date is not available at this time. We will announce the release when it becomes available.

  • 2 weeks later...

Since no one's reported this as a problem, it's unlikely that it will be fixed :)

Can you provide more details please? Has this always been the case? Have you tried reinstalling Retrospect? When are you still required to authenticate?

Thanks.

Is the fact that I'm always required to authenticate, even though I have that option turned off gonna be fixed?

A Scripted Backup that Executes when there is no current user logged in to the Aqua Finder will only prompt for authentication if a user clicks on a Retrospect window (from behind the login window).

If you leave it alone the backup will proceed as expected.

Hi Irena...

It started happening as soon as I installed OS 10.2. Retrospect asks for authentication every time it starts up. I repeatedly uncheck the box that says "Always Require Authentication" but it's to no avail. I even resinstalled Retrospect and ran the updater to 5.0.203, and the bug is still there.

As backup software, Retrospect requires intimate interaction with many of an OS's subsystems. With Jaguar -- Mac OS X 10.2 -- there are differences in the operating system that affect Retrospect.

Dantz continues to work closely with Apple to complete a free update to Retrospect that will provide excellent support for Jaguar and Jaguar Server. In the meantime, customers who choose to upgrade to Jaguar immediately should be aware of the following:

1. An updated Retrospect client that functions properly under Jaguar is now available from the Dantz website. This new client allows computers running Jaguar to be backed up by

Macintosh computers running Retrospect 5.0 under Mac OS 9 or 10.1.x, or by Windows computers running Retrospect 6.0. (Note: Owners of Retrospect 6.0 for Windows already have

this client and need not take any action.) The Retrospect 5.0.536 client for Mac OS X is available at the URL below.

ftp://ftp.dantz.com/pub/updates/client_mac_50536_installer.sit

2. Retrospect 5.0 cannot autolaunch because the RetroRun process crashes every time it is launched. This crash will be visible to any user who has turned on crash logging and crash reporting in Mac OS X's Console utility (located in /Applications/Utilities/).

3. Many SCSI card vendors will need to update their drivers in order for Retrospect to access attached SCSI devices under Jaguar. Our preliminary testing has shown that ATTO

SCSI cards are well supported under Jaguar, but owners of other SCSI cards, including Adaptec models, will need to contact their SCSI card manufacturer for a driver update. At the current time, we are not aware of any such updates being available.

Dantz is working hard to provide complete support for Jaguar. When we do, it will be with a solid product that offers the very best in reliability for safeguarding data under Mac OS X.

This is not what I observe.

If I double-click the Retrospcet 5.0.205 icon, Retrospect will launch, then the RetroRun process will crash, but the Security preference is respected.

Was this a clean install of OS X 10.2?

Aack. I spoke too soon.

If I quit and relaunch Retrospect, the Security preference setting is maintained.

But, if I wait more then 15 seconds it resets itself. Although other times I can wait and it doesn't, but in those cases if I quit and restart right away it wants a password again.

Good thing there's a fix coming!

I'm slightly confused about the update that is compatible with Jaguar. I am currently using Retrospect Backup 5.0.205. The updater (5.0.536) is for the client and not plain Retrospect Backup, correct? With all of the different product names with similar version numbers, it's a little difficult to tell what's what and I just would like to get a straight answer from someone. Obviously Retrospect Backup does not autostart under 10.2. That much is clear. If I start it and just hide the app, Retrospect Backup 5.0.205 seems to work just fine, though I have not attempted a restore. If someone could please clear up the confusion for me, I would appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Brad

The recently released OS X Client software (5.0.536) is described by Dantz as "works in Jaguar." But they note at least one compatibility issue (the Backup Server Defer doesn't work). And this same software was released as part of the Retrospect 6.0 (Windows) product weeks before Jaguar was even finished by Apple.

The current shipping version of Retrospect (5.0.205) has issues with Jaguar. Dantz has noted that the RetroRun process will not run in OS X 10.2 (therefore no autostart). Here on the Forum someone reported that the program seems to ask for authentication even if you've configured it not to. But this version of Retrospect was released long before Jaguar was even announced by Apple.

Dantz has said that they are working on releasing a free update. They usually release clients and applications together, so I would hope (and am expecting) fot them to come up with improvements to both when they're ready.

I too have had this problem since the preview version. I've reinstalled Retrospect, etc. When launching retrospect, it pops up a dialog that says you must authenticate to start retrospect. I'll uncheck the checkbox on that dialog for requiring authentication, and also go to the preferences:security section and uncheck the box there for requiring authentication, but I'm always required to authenticate when manually launching the app.
