WD One-Button Manger in 7.6

Just upgraded to 7.6 and now my Western Digital One-Button Manger shows "red" in the task bar and does not function.

If I remember correctly, there were two files included in 7.5 (WDsrvc_start.bat and wdsvc.exe) that were required and you had to run the batch file manually.

It looks like EMC "forgot" to include them in 7.6

At least I can't find them. Are these files still available?

Thanks

I probably could try to reload version 7.0 or 7.5 and grab the two files - I just don't think that's how a product "upgrade" should be handled.

And, the only support I can find on the EMC site tells me to "run the batch file" to restart the WD Button Manger. (But then, the batch file is no longer there.)

In order to have your Western Digital External Hard Drive functionality work properly, follow these 2 easy steps after installing Retrospect 7.0:

1. Go to Windows Explorer and navigate to the location you installed Retrospect

2. Double-click on the batch file named WDsrvc_start.bat

Retrospect no longer ships the button software for OEM drives. You can check with the drive company for updated button software.

Otherwise you can use the hot key commands found in the Retrospect Menu bar icon to launch Retrospect with a keyboard shortcut.

Well, I sort of knew this would happen - Western Digital says, "Contact EMC.Retrospect", that's where the batch file needs to be placed (in the Retrospect Directory).

And, it was included in version 7.5 - why not just include it in 7.6 - I could understand it being dropped if this were entirely a new release (like 8.0) but this "upgrade" is a "point issue" of the existing program.

Plus, your current Knowledge Base still quotes the above article for 7.0 to run the "included batch file."

Maybe EMC could contact Western Digital - but they say they don't have the files that Retrospect included.

Please excuse my frustration, but when a something is described as an "upgrade", you don't expect functionality to stop working when it has been there since the inception of the program.

Am I caught in an endless loop on this issue?

Hi - THANKS!

I appreciate what you did.

I am still of the opinion that a "point issue" should contain all the previous functionality of the previous release.

It does look like the Maxtor One-Button may have been more popular than the Western Digital version, but I think they dropped that functionality, too.

Maybe in 7.7 they will put it back in.

Bernie,

Is there some reason you just can't simply click on the link in the post above to get the files?

Hi Roxy,

Here are those files. Rename this file by removing the .log extentsion, since it's really a .zip file.

Oh, and something seems wrong with your keyboard because it only seems to type in all caps.
