DaveyBear
The user manual for RE HD says that if the destination backup location is full, that older restore points will be deleted to make room. I have had an issue where this failed to happen. My question is; Is it appropriate to manually delete old restore points, and if so where should this be done? The RE interface, or an explorer window? DaveyBear
My apologies for not being more clear. I am aware that the manual says that it's ok to delete old restore points, but I need a clarification because the manual also states warnings in several places that you should not "Move, rename or delete" the contents of the backup destination folder. One other thing, just for information. If it is okay to delete restore points, that means that the restore points must be differential backups, as opposed to incrementals, correct? Mayoff
Do not delete .rdb data files form the backup disk, if that is your plan. This will corrupt the backup. If the removal of old restore points is not happing automatically, then you could have a corrupt catalog file. Delete the .rbc file from the backup disk. Then reopen Express HD. The catalog file should start to rebuild automatically. After the rebuild, your next backup attempt should delete the old backup data. I'll bookmark this, but it brings to mind another question; What role does the catolog files play in a restore? In other words, if the catalog file is corrupt and I don't know that, will this cause problems trying to recover from a catastrophic drive failure? Mayoff
You will get an error if the catalog is corrupt. It can be rebuilt by deleting it.

Good to know, but I never received any error messages in the past when the program failed to delete restore points. Have you ever experienced anything else that would cause this? By the way,I am using Vista, if that makes a difference. Dave
