spike_dk
Hi! I've recently upgraded my backup-Mac from System 9.2.2 to OS X 10.1.5 and also upgraded Retrospect from v4.3 to v5.0. The machine is a G3 and my backup drive is a HP DLT 718 Autoloader. My problem is that when it is about half way through my backup-script, it gets *really* slow - it starts fine with about 250-300 MB per minute, but as said, it slows down to about 2 MB pr. minute, and at that speed it can't finish the backup job before people start working again..... PS: The volumes I am backing up is mounted network drives (Helios EtherShare on a sun-server), and it is not the server beeing busy that is causing the problem, the backup machine is the only one on the network at night..... Thanks in advance! /Tommy
AmyJ
Which SCSI card are you using?
spike_dk
It is an Adaptec 29160....
ChuckS
The 29160 is not a card Dantz supports under OS X, based on our internal testing and a great deal of user feedback. The list of successfully tested SCSI adapters under X can be found here.
spike_dk
Well, I can tell that the SCSI card is *not* the problem, I tried to backup to a FireWire disk, and the exact same result, after +20 GB, it slows down to about 2.2 MB per minute...... HELP!!!

PS: The volumes I am backing up is mounted network drives (Helios EtherShare on a sun-server) - How much data is on the server? - How many files? - How much gets backed up before it slows down? - Is there any slowdown during the scanning phase? spike_dk
- How much data is on the server? Approx. 110 GB - How many files? On the first volume, about 55.000 - it does not matter if I try to backup the whole volume, or define every folder as a subvolume, same result, it ends up with about 2.2 MB per minute.... - How much gets backed up before it slows down? About 20-25 GB, and then it get s l o w! - Is there any slowdown during the scanning phase? Not at all, it takes about 5 minutes to scan the biggest volume, and then it starts with astounding speed, about +250 MB a minute, but later on...... Anything else I could tell, that would help? But always after 20-25 gigs? In other words, if you defined a 10 gig directory as a subvolume, would you still see the same slowdown? Dave

I haven't tried that much, because I don't like not having a complete backup, so I have used Retrospect 4 in OS 9 the last weeks - but I can try to do the above during the day...!
