ashetech
I have Retrospect Backup Express 5.15 I am running this on a Windows > 2000 Pro Dell computer. I used to lock the machine and let Retrospect > run the unattended backup over night. Now the only way to get a backup > started is to minimize Retrospect and not lock or log off of the > machine. Under the configure tab in preferences I have checked enable > Retrospect Launcher service which I thought activated unattended backup. > When I unlock the computer and open Retrospect the next morning it will > start the backup from the previous night. I know I used to lock the > computer and it would backup over night. Any thoughts? >
foneal
I have an opinion on this problem, but it should probably be validated by Dantz. I use a Compaq 5340US running Windows XP and Retro Express 5.6. I do not turn off my computer but I do use the ACPI feature to allow the system to go into a "standby" mode. This provides a quick startup and my user id remains logged in. Apparently there is a problem with the scheduling feature of Retrospect Express. It seems that the scheduling service to perform the unattneded backup is attached to the user id that performed the installation of the program. This is not a problem, as long as the same id remains logged into the system. The second problem is that the backup scheduler does not offer the same feature as Windows Backup or the Scheduler that is built into Windows which has a checkbox to enable "Wake the Computer to Run this Task". I have tested the Windows Backup using this feature and it works fine. This would explain why the backup runs the next morning when I wake up the computer manually. This is very dissapointing because of the amount of resources that the software requires to run. This means that my system is very unresponsive until it is complete and I have to just walk away. Since Dantz does not support the "Standby' modes of the newer PC's, I may as well use a reminder in my email and perform a backup at my convenience (or in-convenience). --- Floyd
lv2ski
One thing is right - Retrospect does not support the standby, power down, sleep, energy saver mode, etc of computers. We cannot wake a PC in standby mode or energy saver mode. Retrospect can, however, backup the machine when it is logged out. We have not seen any issues with this. The backup will start and complete while the system is logged out. If this isn't working for you, give me some more details on what has changed since the time it was working for you, to the time it isn't. If you have never gotten this to work, when you eventually log into the system, does Retrospect launch and want to run the backup? Melissa
foneal
Thank you for your time and information. Actually, Retrospect will run without being logged on, in the background once I bring my computer out of standby mode. I would normally be logged in as soon as I startup the system from standby and see Retrospect starting the backup process so it appeard to be attached to the logon process. I still do not have a solution to my problem and that is that I would like to have Retrospect wake my system during the night to perform my backup and then go back into standby mode. I was wondering if there would be a way to create a batch file that could be attached to the Windows Scheduler. The scheduler would then bring up my system from standby by checking the appropriate box in the task properties, settings tab for power management and Retrospect would then perform my backup? --- Floyd
lv2ski
You could probably create a batch file that will do that. Retrospect currently cannot wake a computer for backup.
rvmoore
Well, this may no longer be an active thread, but just for completeness :-) you don't need a batch file. I have created a task w/in the task scheduler to run Retrospect about 5 mins prior to the backups I've scheduled in Retrospect itself; with the "wake" box selected, the system comes out of standy, runs the backup, and goes back to sleep after the time set in the power options properties. Works great. Robert
