Getting a Selector Right

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm trying to backup my OS X drive from my OS 9 server computer. I have the latest build of version 5 and the proper working clients. My problem is that my OS X drive is too large to fit on two tapes (NS-20 and NS-8). I would like to backup everything on my OS X drive except a large enclosing folder (11MB) called archives and my iTunes folder (8MB). I'm having problems creating appropriate selectors that will do what I want. I am able to get the archives folder excluded but I'm having trouble getting the iTunes folder excluded because it is nested in my home folder inside the music folder. I know I could exclude my home folder but I want all the other stuff in the home folder backed up. I have tried creating a selector that excludes the iTunes folder but when I check the selector it is still slated to back up. Also I have tried creating a subvolume but for the iTunes folder and the Archives folder but still when I select my OS X partition for backup and try to exclude these two folders/volumes they are still being backed up. How can I create a selector or a script that will back up all of my OS X drive but not these two enclosing folders?

Thanks for your help.

Chris

Go to Immediate > Backup. Set your Source as the hard drive that contains the ITunes folder. Choose any destination.

Click on Preview. This will bring up a browser window of all files on the drive.

'Unmark' all files/folders.

Mark only the folder you wish to exclude

Go to Browser > Save Highlights

Give the Selector a name, such as ITunes

Close out of all Immediate Backup windows

Go to Special > Selectors

Edit your new selector

Drag the selection criteria down to the 'Exclude' section

Add an "or" condition to also exclude your Archive folder

Try:

Always Exclude:

--Name (File/Folder)

----Enclosing Folder_Path Name_Does_Exactly Match:

------MacintoshHD/Users/YourHome/Documents/iTunes/

Or, to make scanning faster, you can Define your Home directory as a subvolume, choose it as your Source, and use a selector such as:

Always Exclude:

--Name (File/Folder)

----Enclosing Folder_Path Name_Does_Exactly Match:

------YourHome/Documents/iTunes/

Thanks Dave and Amy for your replies.

I tried creating the selector using Amy's technique and it worked like a charm. I never new you could create selectors by using a finder like browse this way.

Thanks again for your help.
