help with message in retropds.log

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I need some help in understanding a message in the retropds.log

ServWait: received msg DScn

I have a lot of these messages. Occasionally the compression is different although the data type isn't that much different. But the backup is asking for a second tape. Most of the times I have around 40gb remaining on the tape.

I am not to familiar with retrospect since I am working just a few months at the backups smile.gif

Maybe the message above has something to do with compression.

I am using version 6.1.126 on the backup server (Mac OS X 10.4.11) and version 6.1.107 on the client (Mac OS Server 10.3.9).

Any help is welcome.

thanks in advance

regards,

Ronald

Sorry, should have mentioned the drives smile.gif

We are using HP Storageworks LTO2

How I know that we have 40gb remaining .. Well this is estimated.. The last time the tape was full we cleared about 40 gb of data (that was not long ago.. ) when I check the log of retrospect I see no increase in data for the last few days..

I'm not sure what you mean by this. LTO2 tapes have a native capacity of 200 GB; LTO1 tapes, 100 GB. Which kind of tapes are you using?

This is probably not the best way to get a feel for how much data has been backed up. If you go to Configure> Backup Sets> Configure [your backup set]> Members, you will see the amount of data that has actually been written to each tape member.

We consider ourselves lucky to get an overall 20-25% compression with our typical mix of files. Your situation may differ significantly.

Did you read Russ's comments as I suggested? Neither Retrospect nor the tape drive have any real idea of how much tape is remaining. Retrospect will simply write to it until the tape is full (unless a tape or drive error causes it to stop writing sooner).
