Very slow transfer rate

Recommended Posts

We're running Retrospect Workgroup 6.1.138 on Mac OS X 10.4.11 server.

We're using 750 GB Maxtor UltraTouch III FW800 -drives as backup set destinations. Transfer rates have been quite irregular - sometimes 500 Mb/s, but usually around 20/40 Mb/s. Since the size of backup sets are around 550 GB, it takes way too long to make a backup with 20 Mb/s.

I tried to make a backup to a mounted SATA disk on a workstation and transfer rate was over 600 Mb/s all the time. So, what's the problem with FW800?

Your information about your hardware setup is sparse. In particular, how many devices are on the FW800 bus? Are any being used as sources when one is the destination of a backup?

Is the SATA disk on the same workstation as the Maxtor FW drive(s)?

What kind of transfer rate do you achieve if the destination Maxtor drive is connected via FW400 or USB?

No. It's a AFP -mounted drive on a workstation in our office ethernet

Haven't tried that out. I'll inform you soon about that.

No - there's no difference between FW800 and FW400.

Now I plugged that Maxtor harddrive to my workstation and mounted it with AFP from the Retrospect server. The result: Transfer rate is now around 500 Mb/s all the time.

So instead of being directly connected to the server, it's better to have the backup set made to that same drive over ethernet.

Edit: Transfer rates still get very low, though at first it looked like faster. So why do those speeds vary so much when using an external disk?

The server is also used as a file server, so data throughput is quite high. Could that be the reason? It's a separate drive with that backup set.
