DaveF
Thanks to your poor documentation, I continue to have trouble with Express 5.6.132. Will you please explain how I exclude a folder from backup. If I deselect such as "Downloads" in the browser (after choosing select) and proceed back to the main directory, zero bytes are indicated for backup although there are several new files. The only way I can get exactly what I want is by deleting folders which I do not want backed up from my hard drive and reinstall them later. Of course that's a needless pain. A strange sidepoint to this is that I deselected another folder for my original backups and that one remains deselected in the browser with no further action on my part (I realize Express selections are not "sticky"). I would greatly appreciate a step-by-step procedure that even a dense brain (mine) can understand. Incidentally, I have let Express proceed with backups even though it said "0" bytes selected. Sometimes I would get something (not all) and sometimes nothing except another snapshot (useless). Thank you. Dave
ChuckS
A common mistake is to uncheck selected files while the Retrospect preview browser window shows multiple items highlighted. If, for instance, two items are highlighted and checked, unchecking the box for one item unchecks the box for both. Try making sure that only the item you want to exclude is highlighted before you uncheck the box in the preview window.
DaveF
Thanks Chuck. I will remember to keep an eye out for that during my next backup, as well as for the diamonds Melissa said indicates files which were already backed up and won't be repeated. I am not aware of any place we can go to see what all those little icons in the preview pane indicate. Is there somewhere we can learn that? Thanks. ChuckS
That's a good question. I checked the online tutorials but none of them show that browser window. It *is* in the user's guide. For Express, you'll have to search through the .PDF document that came on your install CD. If you don't have an install CD handy, you can always download the latest documentation from the main Dantz site. I can't refer you to a specific page right now, but I know it's there- I've seen it. DaveF
Hi Chuck. Thanks for your message. Well, I looked all over my Dantz folder (again) and the CD, but I cannot find anything about the icons in the preview pane. As I have stated, Melissa has explained the diamond icon in another thread. Can you tell me what the icon which looks like a pencil with a line through it represents? As far as the diamond icon, after looking through the preview pane, that doesn't make complete sense either. I could see some files with the diamond which I was sure had been backed up previously, but I also saw files which did not have the diamond yet I could think of no reason why they would have changed since the last backup. Yet "apparently" they were marked for backup. Maybe they would not have been backed up due to Dantz's so called "smart" incrementals. Your advice re the pencil (?) icon would be appreciated. Thank you. Dave
lv2ski
pencil with line through it means Write protected. Can't write to it.
DaveF
Thank you Melissa. Now that I have your attention (?), would you please refer to the thread "Uprgading Express to Desktop" so you can see a new question I submitted yesterday. At that time I erroneously replied to myself and I'm not sure you would see the message. It concerns another problem re the trial version of Desktop. Thank you.
