trouble backing up over network

I am working with 10.4.11 and trying to duplicate my "Users" folder to a network drive maintained by my school. I mount the drive on my desktop, and I'm connected via VPN so it sees me as an authorized user. But i have run into 2 sets of problems... that I don't understand.

 

1. On my first try, it stops trying to duplicate a few minutes, with this log:

2. I noticed in this log that the problem seems to be with files in the Trash -- so I emptied my trash and tried again. This time, again it got going but again it stalled out -- but this time with an screen popping up saying the connection had been lost and indeed, the server had disappeared from my screen, with this as log:

Likely part of your problem. Did you follow the instructions provided in the "Read Me-Retrospect.html" file that was installed alongside the program?

What is "it" in this context?

 

There is too much information omitted from the original post. For example:

- What version of Retrospect are you using?

- What file sharing protocol is being used to mount the share?

- What formatting scheme is used by the share?

 

One thing can be inferred, which is that your Destination volume doesn't support all the information in your Macintosh files. One way around that (after you've read up on how to Duplicate to shared volumes) is to create a Sparse Disk Image file, which would present itself as a HFS+ volume to Retrospect, and would support all the attributes of Macintosh files.
