It's your choice.

 

Without the catalog file, you can't browse or restore from the backup set. You can always re-create the catalog file, but it might take many, many hours, depending on the size of your backup set and the number of files in it.

 

It's all a question of how fast you might need a restored file, and the time to find it out of all of your backups. That's part of your backup policy, which should be designed to suit your particular needs.
